Sri Lanka have been knocked out of the race for the ICC World Test Championship (ICC WTC) final after failing to beat New Zealand in the recently-concluded Test in Christchurch. The visitors needed to win the Test to keep their hopes of going ahead of India in the ICC WTC Points Table alive.
However, the Black Caps dashed their hopes by beating them by 2 wickets . Sri Lanka started the game on a good note and were the better team for the first two days of the Test. Asked to bat first, the Islanders scored 355 in the first innings. With the ball, Sri Lanka had reduced New Zealand to 151 for 5 and then 188 for 6 but just could not deliver the finishing blow.
Daryl Mitchell waged a lone battle with the bat for the home side and scored a fighting century to help his team recover from the poor start to post 373. Matt Henry also played a crucial knock of 72 runs.

In the second innings too, Sri Lanka did well with the bat, scoring 302 runs to set New Zealand a target of 285 runs. Former captain Angelo Mathews led the charge with the bat by playing a fine innings of 115 runs. In reply, New Zealand chased down the total with one the very last ball of the Test. Skipper Kane Williamson starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 121.
