VIjay Shankar, NCA, injury, Cricket World Cup

During the middle of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar was ruled out from the remainder of the tournament due to a toe injury. The 28-year-old all-rounder will now undergo tests at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to measure his injury.

Vijay Shankar had a significant role in this Cricket World Cup as the team management sorted out him for the no.4 batting position. However, Shankar failed to earn much success in this tournament. He played three matches in the 2019 CWC where he scored 58 runs (average 29.00) and also took two wickets.

During the 2019 CWC, Shankar played against Pakistan, Afghanistan and Windies.

During a practice session, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah‘s yorker hit on Shankar’s left toe. Later, the scans confirmed that Shankar had a fracture on his injured toe. Soon, the uncapped-ODI player Mayank Agarwal replaced him for the remainder of the tournament.

Now, Shankar is ready for the next step to assess his injury.

On last Saturday (13th July), Shankar said according to Sportstar, “I will be going to the NCA tomorrow and will have it (toe) assessed. I will get to know the extent of the injury in the next three-four days.”

He said, “I hope to make my debut in the TNPL this year. I will hope to give my best to Chepauk Super Gillies if I get to play.”

Vijay Shankar believes that TNPL is an excellent platform for many cricketers. While recently some top TNPL performers have earned the IPL contracts, Shankar wants to see it for more TNPL successful cricketers.

The all-rounder added, “Every year TNPL has made an impact in domestic circles. It’s a great platform for many cricketers.”

“I think whoever did well [in TNPL] have been picked for Tamil Nadu and have made their mark in IPL (Indian Premier League) so it’s a good platform. Washi (Washington Sundar), Varun Charkravarthy, Murugan Ashwin… these guys are bedded into the IPL. I wish more cricketers [from TNPL] go on to play in the IPL.”

TNPL 2019 will run from 19th July to 15th August. In this eight-team competition, Siechem Madurai Panthers will play as the defending champions in the TNPL 2019.
