The very good friends Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammates, have decided to raise funds for the needy people through the auction of their bats, gloves and jerseys of their 2016 Green match, where both were involved in records.
The IPL 2020 has been postponed for the indefinite period due to the coronavirus pandemic. Recently during this leisure period, the RCB captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain AB de Villiers met in Instagram live. They recalled the memory of RCB’s historic Green match during the IPL 2016 where the duo set the record partnership in IPL history.
It was the match against Gujarat Lions (GL) at Bengaluru on 14th May 2016 where RCB were sent to bat first. While the opener Chris Gayle (6) departed cheaply, skipper and the other opener Kohli handled that early situation very well along with AB de Villiers. They broke their previous record of 215 runs partnership for the unbroken second wicket (against Mumbai Indians at Mumbai on 10th May 2015). They set the new record of 229 runs partnership for the second wicket during that Green match.
De Villiers said during the latest chat with Kohli, “We have had a few good knocks together, I will never forget that. There is one particular knock I can remember, the one against Gujarat Lions in 2016.”
While De Villiers was not out on 129 runs (52 balls), Kohli (109 runs 55 balls) completed his century in the final over of that innings. RCB scored 248/3 (20 overs), and they won that match by 144 runs as the GL only managed to score 104 (18.4 overs).
During the latest chat, De Villiers also spoke to set an online auction for their bats, gloves and jerseys of that game to help the needy people.
De Villiers added, “The partnership was an enjoyable one. If I can remember correctly, I got 120-odd and you also got your hundred right at the end where I gave you the strike. That doesn’t happen every day where 2 batsmen get hundreds in the same game. That was also the green game where we did our part to raise awareness about the environment. Then I was thinking we could make a difference. That’s why I told you to get hold of that bat. I know you keep your bats, I also do that.”
“From that particular match, I have the green shirt as well. I remember I got you to sign the shirt, I have also signed the shirt. I have got the shirt and my bat and I am going to get hold of your bat and the gloves. The plan is to get on an online auction platform. I know there are a lot of collectors around the world that wouldn’t mind your bat, I will throw it mine as well.”
Virat Kohli is ready to follow AB de Villiers’ request
Kohli also feels amazing with this gesture, and he is ready to follow De Villiers’ request.
Virat Kohli replied, “That’s amazing the fact that you also share a part of it for India. Quite an amazing gesture. I got the stuff that you asked from me.”
De Villiers also clarified that the entire fund would be shared in India and South Africa with equal ratio.
