The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the award winners and the top playing XIs of the last calendar year on Wednesday (15th January). While only two Indian players have been selected in the ICC Test Team of the year 2019, Indian captain Virat Kohli has been selected as the captain of this team.
It (2019) was the eventful year in Test cricket. From 2019, we have seen the kick-off of the ICC World Test Championship as the first edition will run till the end of 2020/21 season. This new Test tournament started from the Ashes 2019 in England, which was a thrilling series and the final scoreline was 2-2, but the defending title holders Australia finally took the trophy.
The other special Test cricket moments in 2019 were India and Bangladesh played together their first-ever day-night Test match, Afghanistan won their first-ever Test match (won two Test matches) etc.
Virat Kohli has been chosen as the captain of the yearly Test team for the third successive times
Coming back to the ICC Test Team of the Year, a total of 43 members of 2019 voting academy selected this team. Indian captain Virat Kohli has been chosen as the captain of the Test Team of 2019. It is the third consecutive years when he has been selected as the captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year.
Virat Kohli led the no.1-ranked Test side in their all eight matches of that year where India won seven games and drew once. Under his captaincy, India won their first-ever Test series in Australia, as India won the four-match Test series in Australia in 2018/19 by the 2-1 margin. Also, not to forget that Virat Kohli is the no.1-ranked Test batsman at the present moment as the right-handed batsman scored 612 runs in 11 Test innings with an average of 68.00.
Mayank Agarwal is the only other Indian who has been selected in the ICC Test Team of 2019. While he made his Test debut on the Boxing Day of 2018 during the Melbourne Test, he finished as the most Test run-scorer (754 runs) for India in 2019.
A total of five Australian cricketers have been selected in the ICC Test Team of 2019 while three New Zealand players and only England cricketer have also been named in this playing XI.
