Waqar Younis Feels Test Championship Without Pakistan And India Test Matches Makes No Sense

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis believes that the Test Championship has no value if India and Pakistan don’t face each other in this tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced the ICC World Test Championship from 2019 to make the Test cricket more relevant, powerful and interesting. The first edition of this tournament is running as it is the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship.

However, India-Pakistan are not facing each other in the first edition of this tournament. Due to the political tensions between the two countries, they haven’t involved in the international bilateral series since January 2013. Meanwhile, their last Test meeting was long back in December 2007. At present, they only meet in the multinational tournaments which have been organised by the ACC or ICC.

Waqar Younis believes that the Test Championship makes no sense if India and Pakistan can’t face each other in this tournament. Understanding the present issues between the two countries, Younis believes that the ICC should have intervened in this matter and brought out some positive structure.

In an interview to the YouTube channel Cricket Baaz, Younis said, “I know it is a difficult situation between Pakistan and India even at government to government level but I think the ICC needed to play a more proactive role in this championship.

“The ICC should have intervened and done something because to me having a Test championship without Pakistan and India Test matches makes no sense.”

Waqar Younis made his Test debut against India during the Karachi Test in November 1989. Incidentally, it was the same Test where the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut. In his international career, Younis played only four Tests against India.

He added on this topic, “It’s always been like this that is why making my Test debut against India is something I don’t forget.”

Waqar Younis lauded present Indian pace bowling line-up

Waqar Younis also praised the massive improvement in the Indian pace bowling line-up. He feels that it is the big reason why the Indian team is performing well in the present international cricket.

He said, “If you see India has really worked hard in this area and they are now producing bowlers regularly who bowl in the 140 plus range.

“In the past it was not like this. But things have changed. (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammed) Shami, Ishant (Sharma) they have taken India to the top. That is why India is doing so well in Test and other formats now.”

Talking more about the present Indian successful pace bowling line-up, Younis feels that India have a very clear rotation policy.
