ToggleHopes were sky high from India skipper Virat Kohli when he had come out to bat in both the innings of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide. On the last Test tour, Kohli had scored centuries in both the innings of the Adelaide Test. His record in Australia is equally impressive.

On the last tour, Kohli’s aggregate of 692 runs is the highest for any Indian batsman in any series in Australia – beating the previous best by Rahul Dravid (619 in 8 innings in 2003-04). In fact, it was the fifth-highest run aggregate for any opposition batsman in a series in Australia. So far, the right-handed batsman has amassed 992 runs in 8 Tests in Australia. He has five hundreds and two fifties Down Under.

Not surprisingly, all eyes were on Kohli when he came out to bat. However, the India skipper failed to deliver in both the innings. In the first innings, he managed just 3. In the second, he got the start but failed to convert it and fell for 34. And his rare failures with the bat soon invited trolls as the opportunists made the most of the rare chance.
However, their happiness lasted just for a handful of days as Kohli once again shut their mouth in style by scoring a sensational century in the ongoing second Test. The 30–year old had walked in to bat when India were in deep trouble. The visitors had lost both their openers – KL Rahul (2) and Murali (0)- cheaply. But Kohli shared crucial partnerships with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane to bail India out of trouble and then went on to complete his ton.

And as soon as he reached the triple-digit mark with a glorious four, he made sure to give it back to his critics. The India skipper pointed at his bat before gesturing with his hands to ask his critics to shut up, making it clear that his bat does the talking.

India, meanwhile, lead the ongoing four-match Border-Gavaskar series 1-0 after winning the series-opener by 31 runs. A win in the ongoing game will help them not only take an unassailable lead but also retain the trophy which they reclaimed at home last year after winning the series 2-1.
