Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed in a chat with Muttiah Muralitharan asking him why he stopped him from bowling leg-spin, during their time in CSK. The Indian and Sri Lankan off-spinners got in a chat and discussed their old times together in the colours of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
R. Ashwin was considered to be a T20 specialist when he first broke into Team India, but he’s currently only representing them in the Test format. He hasn’t played any limited-overs match for India since 2017. The 48-year-old Muttiah Muralitharan is one of the greatest cricket players. He has taken 800 wickets in 230 innings with a best of 9 for 51 and has the record for the most test wickets.
For Variation, I Bowled Leg-Spin For A Few Days And They Selected Me: Muttiah Muralitharan
The Sri Lankan off-spinner told his story of breaking into the team by bowling leg-spin because the team already had two off-spinners.
I bowled leg spin for a few years in my school days, the reason was Ruwan Kalpage, also a Sri Lanka cricketer, who was also an off-spinner. There was another Test spinner in our age-group, a left-arm spinner. With two spinners playing in our team, I didn’t get a place. So for variation, I bowled leg-spin for a few days and they selected me for a season. I have confidence in bowling leg-spin but not sure it would have come out well in Test cricket. Bowling leg spin and spinning the ball, bowling googlies is easy but landing the ball correctly is difficult. said Muttiah Muralitharan
Why Did You Stop Me From Bowling Leg-Spin? Asks R. Ashwin
R. Ashwin asked Muralitharan that why did he stop him from bowling leg-spin and the Sri Lankan had a fitting reply.
Ashwin asked ‘Why are you bowling leg spin? Bowl off-spin, you do that very well.’ Why did you say that to me?
“Me bowling leg spin was to get into the U-19 side. Now you are going to try and play for India and the selectors say then only want leg spinners,
the onus is on experience. Only when you take wickets, you will get the confidence. It’s about proving yourself. Not just proving yourself by bowling leg spin. Instead, take more wickets by bowling off-spin that’s a challenge. Even I got dropped in my career.” answered Muralitharan
Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is celebrated as the highest ODI wicket-taker with a total of 534 wickets and highest test wicket-taker with 800 wickets. 33-year-old R. Ashwin will feature with Delhi Capitals side in this IPL after he was released from KXIP side which he captained last year.
