On Monday (4 March), the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel announced the 13-member Windies squad for the upcoming three-match home T20I series against England.
The selectors have put faith in the core members of recently concluded home ODI series against England. Jason Holder will lead the Windies T20I side for the first time. Though the former T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite is in the squad, the selectors have decided to go with Jason Holder. However, Jason Holder hasn’t played a T20I match since April 2017.
Under Jason Holder’s captaincy, Windies have recently achieved massive success in other formats. In the ongoing England tour of the Caribbean, Windies won the Test series and drew the ODI series under Jason Holder’s captaincy. At first, Jason Holder-led Windies won the Test series by 2-1 (Jason Holder missed the third Test). Later, Windies drew the five-match home ODI series by 2-2, and that was also under Jason Holder’s captaincy.
We retain the ODI squad as the preparation for the World Cup
On the other hand, the Windies side is looking forward to this series as their final preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
England and Wales will host the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup from 30 May to 14 July. Windies will begin their World Cup journey on 31 May against Pakistan at Nottingham.
Though Windies will also play an ODI tri-series in Ireland, just before the World Cup, some players will be unavailable due to the IPL stint. So, the selectors have maintained the ODI squad for the upcoming T20I series.
Courtney Browne, the chairman of selectors, said, “After discussion with the coach surrounding preparation for the World Cup, it was proposed that we retain the ODI squad to play the T20 matches against England. After deliberations with captain, coach and the panel, we all are of the opinion that it would aid in the team’s World Cup preparations.”
Andre Russell has missed out the T20I series due to the fitness issue
Meanwhile, Andre Russell will miss the upcoming T20I series due to the fitness issue. The all-rounder was selected for the last two ODIs of the recently concluded home ODI series against England. However, he didn’t play any matches of that series.
CWI stated, “A CWI medical panel outlined that Andre Russell has been withdrawn from the squad, due to an adverse reaction he had to a medical procedure done in Dubai before he flew to the Caribbean.”
