You Feel Good When Your Skipper Starts Trusting You So Much – Yuzvendra Chahal
The leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is now an essential member of the national squad. He has credited the Indian skipper Virat Kohli to put enough trust on him.
Since making his international debut in June 2016, Yuzvendra Chahal has gradually become one of the consistent spinners for India. He has played 40 ODIs and 29 T20Is where he has picked up 71 and 45 wickets respectively. At present, he is the fifth-ranked ODI bowler.
Recently, the 28-year-old leg-spinner produced top-class performances in India’s tour in Australia and New Zealand. During the Australia tour, he achieved the best ODI bowling figure by a bowler in Australia. In the Melbourne ODI last January, he had the bowling figure of 10-0-42-6. Later, in the New Zealand tour, he was the joint most wicket-taker for India in the ODI series. He and the pacer Mohammed Shami both picked up nine wickets each.
Talking about his consistent success, Yuzvendra Chahal has credited Virat Kohli for trusting him.
Recently, the leg-spinner told TOI, “Khel khel ke maturity aayi hai (Playing constant cricket has helped me become mature). You feel good when your skipper starts trusting you so much. It feels nice to become one of the main players. It brings pressure with it too, but the way you tackle that pressure is also part of the process.”
Virat Kohli is also his captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Yuzvendra Chahal is playing under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in RCB since his joining in the team in 2014. Under this leadership, he has shown a lot of improvement to evolve himself as a world-class spinner.
I am not even close to what Ashwin and Jaddu bhaiya have achieved
Just a few years ago, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the main spinners of Indian national cricket team. However, at present Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are the front-line spinners in India’s limited-overs cricket.
Talking about the senior spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal claimed that he was not even close to their achievements.
He said, “Everyone works hard. If you are talking about wrist spinners, then I am not even close to what Ashwin and Jaddu bhaiya (Ravindra Jadeja) have achieved. They have sustained for 8-10 years. Kuldeep and I have only started out. They have played more matches than the number of wickets we have taken. They have taken nearly 350 and 200 Test wickets respectively. Kuldeep and I have barely taken 100 international wickets.”
Recently, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have completed 100 ODI wickets (101 ODI wickets) while playing together. In limited-overs cricket, they have taken 142 wickets while playing together.
