UCL Round-Up: Man City Beat Barcelona, Other Favourites Clinch Hard Fought Victories!

On Tuesday (01/11/2016) night in the UCL, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City beat Barcelona by 3-1. On the other hand, Arsenal, PSG, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid also clinched victories.

In the Group C’s return leg match between Manchester City and Barcelona, hosts City took revenge over Barcelona by beating them 3-1. On 21 minutes, Lionel Messi put Barcelona ahead by 1-0. On 39 minutes, Ilkay Gundogan equalised the scoreline (1-1) for the hosts.

Six minutes in the second half, Kevin De Bruyne scored an outstanding goal from a free-kick as City took 2-1 lead over the visitors. On 74 minutes, Gundogan extended City’s lead to 3-1 by scoring his second goal in this match. Despite this defeat, Barcelona secured their berth for Round-of-16 in the ongoing UCL season, while City still has to wait for confirmation until the next match day.

In the previous Group Stage encounter between these two teams in the ongoing UCL season, Barcelona had thrashed City by 4-0 in their home game with the help of Messi’s hat-trick.

In another Group C match, hosts Borussia Monchengladbach drew against Celtic 1-1. Lars Stind put the hosts ahead on 32 minutes. Celtic levelled the scoreline on 76 minutes through Moussa Dembele’s penalty. Celtic was awarded the penalty after Dembele was hauled into the penalty box by the hosts’ defender Julian Korb. As a result, Celtic was awarded a penalty and Korb was sent off. Dembele made no mistake to score from that penalty and snatched a point for his team.

In the Group A encounters, Arsenal and PSG confirmed their spots in the UCL 2016/17 Round-of-16 after winning their away matches.

From 0-2 behind, Arsenal snatched a 3-2 victory against the hosts Ludogorets Razgrad. With the goals of Jonathan Cafu (12′) and Claudiu Keseru (15′), hosts took an early 2-0 lead over Arsenal. Arsenal came back into the match after Granit Xhaka opened the scoreline for the English club on 20 minutes. On 41 minutes, Olivier Giroud scored the equaliser goal for Arsenal through a header.

On 87 minutes, Mesut Ozil scored a beautiful winning goal for Arsenal.

On the other hand, PSG clinched a 2-1 victory against the 10-man host, FC Basel. Just before end of the first half, Blaise Matuidi (43’) put PSG ahead by 1-0. On 76 minutes, Luca Zuffi scored the equaliser goal for the hosts. FC Basel’s midfielder Serey Die was shown red card at 84 minutes after he was booked for the second time in this match. Just 6 minutes earlier, Die was booked for the first time in this match. On the final normal time, Thomas Meunier scored the winning goal for PSG.

In the Group C clashes, hosts Besiktas held to a 1-1 draw against Napoli while another hosts Benfica beat Dynamo Kiev by 1-0.

At 78 minutes, Besiktas went ahead by 1-0 through Ricardo Quaresma’s penalty. 4 minutes later, Marek Hamsik struck the equaliser goal for Napoli as the match ended 1-1.

On the other hand, host Benfica clinched a victory against Dynamo Kiev through Eduardo Salvio’s penalty goal at the injury time of the first half (45’+2’). However, the visitors had an easy chance to equalise the scoreline when they also won a penalty in 68 minutes. But Junior Moraes’s shot was saved by the hosts goalie (Ederson Moraes) during that penalty as the visitors failed to equalise the scoreline.

In the Group D matches, Bayern Munich beat the hosts PSV Eindhoven by 2-1 while hosts Atletico Madrid also defeated Rostov by 2-1. With these victories, Bayern and Atletico both have secured their berth in the UCL 2016/17 Round-of-16.

On 14 minutes, PSV Eindhoven went 1-0 ahead over Bayern Munich through Santiago Arias’s headed goal. Robert Lewandowski scored the equaliser goal for the visitors at 34 minutes through converting a penalty. At 73 minutes, Lewandowski scored his second goal in the match which was also the match winning goal for Bayern Munich.

Hosts Atletico Madrid also snatched a 2-1 victory against Rostov through an injury time goal. At 28 minutes, Antoine Griezmann opened the scoreline and put Atletico Madrid ahead by 1-0. Just 2 minutes later, Rostov equalised the scoreline (1-1) through Sardar Azmoun’s goal.

Griezmann also scored the second goal for the hosts in the injury time (90’+3’) which helped Atletico Madrid secure 3 points at the end.
