13-09-2016 UCL round-up: Barcelona, Bayern begin with thrashing victories

On the opening day of the UEFA Champions League 2016/17, Barcelona and Bayern Munich outclassed their opponents Celtic and Rostov respectively. Also Arsenal drew against PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) while Atletico Madrid secured a victory over PSV Eindhoven. On the other hand, Manchester City’s home game against Borussia Monchengladbach was postponed due to heavy rain.

Both of the Group A matches, PSG vs Arsenal and FC Basel vs Ludogorets Razgrad were drawn by 1-1. In the PSG vs Arsenal match, Edinson Cavani put ahead the hosts PSG in the very first minute of the match. At just 42 seconds of the match, Cavani scored the goal with a header through a perfect cross from Serge Aurier. Alexis Sanchez equalised the scoreline for Arsenal in 77 minutes of the match. Just before end of the match, Olivier Giroud from Arsenal and Marco Verrati from PSG were sent off after both were shown second yellow cards.

On the other hand, FC Basel vs Ludogorets Razgrad match was drawn by 1-1. Jonathan Cafu put ahead the visitors Ludogorets Razgrad just before the end of the first half. FC Basel made comeback into the match with Steffen’s goal in 80 minutes of the match.

In the Group B matches, Benfica vs Besiktas match ended a draw with 1-1 score while Napoli beat 10-man Dynamo Kiev by 2-1.

In the Benfica vs Besiktas match, hosts Benfica took the early lead with Franco Cervi’s 12 minute goal. Visitors Besiktas rescued the match with the very last minute goal from Talisca.

In the Group C encounter, Barcelona outclassed their visitors Celtic by 7-0 with the help of Messi’s hat-trick and Suarez’s double. Messi opened Barcelona’s account at just 3 minute while he also netted the second goal at 27 minutes and then followed by Neymar and Iniesta at 50’ and 59’ respectively. On the one hour of the match, Messi completed his hat-trick. Suarez extended the lead with two late goals at 75 and 88 minutes of the match.

Another Group C match Manchester City vs Borussia Monchengladbach at Etihad Stadium was postponed due to heavy rain. The match was rescheduled on Wednesday at same time.

In the Group D match, Bayern Munich thrashed visitors Rostov by 5-0 while Atletico Madrid won by 1-0 against the hosts PSV Eindhoven.

Robert Lewandowski scored the opening goal for Bayern Munich through a penalty in 28 minutes. In the injury time of the first half, Thomas Muller doubled the lead. Joshua Kimmich stretched the lead twice in 53 and 60 minutes of the match. At 90 minutes, Juan Bernat scored Bayern Munich’s 5th goal of the match.

On the other hand, visitors Atletico Madrid beat PSV Eindhoven with the only goal of Saul Niguez. Niguez scored the goal at 43 minutes of the match.
