CONMEBOL WC Qualifiers round-up: Neymar-less Brazil clinches a victory; Messi-less Argentina suffered a defeat
In the round 10 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification from CONMEBOL zone, Neymar-less Brazil cruised to a 2-0 victory against Venezuela while Messi-less Argentina were handed a defeat against Paraguay. On the other hands, Chile beat Peru by 2-1 while Uruguay held to 2-2 draw against the hosts Colombia.
On the day’s first game, 10 men Ecuador drew with the hosts Bolivia by 2-2. Pablo Escobar put the hosts with an early stunning goal from outside the box in 3 minutes. Just before the half-time, Escobar added another goal for the hosts in 43 minutes as Bolivia was leading against Ecuador by 2-0 at the end of the 1st half.
Just 2 minutes of the second half, Enner Valencia scored the first goal for Ecuador in the match after he successfully netted a ball from Antonio Valencia’s cross. Ecuador went down to 10 men after their centre-back Luis Caicedo was shown red card due to a second booking. Caicedo was booked for the first time in this match at 63 minutes. In the 89 minutes, Enner Valencia scored the equaliser goal for Ecuador and secured a point for his team.
Hosts Colombia were also held to a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Abel Aguilar put the hosts ahead in 15 minutes with a header which was replied by Cristian Rodríguez’s header in 27 minutes as Uruguay made 1-1 on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Barcelona star Luis Suarez put Uruguay ahead in 73 minutes from a difficult angle. In the 84th minute, Colombia leveled the scoreline (2-2) with a header from Fernando Mina. The final scorecard in the match 2-2 as both the teams earned a point each at the end of the match.
With the help of Uruguay’s draw, Neymar-less Brazil took the top spot in WC qualifiers points table (CONMEBOL) after clinching a 2-0 victory against the last positioned Venezuela. Gabriel Jesus scored the first goal for Brazil in this game just 8 minutes into the match from a big mistake of the hosts Venezuela’s goalie Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez put a wrong pass in the front of Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus, who coolly chipped the ball which was successfully netted as a result. Willian stretched the lead to 2-0 in 53 minutes by finishing Renato Augusto’s cross. With this victory, Brazil took the top spot of the CONMEBOL WC qualifiers points table after surpassing Uruguay.
On the other hand, Messi-less Argentina were handed a 1-0 defeat against Paraguay with the goal of Derlis Gonzalez in 18 minutes. Despite the home side Argentina dominated over the visitors on the pitch for most of the time, the home side failed to score.
2015 and 2016 Copa America champion Chile finally tasted a victory against Peru by 2-1 with the help of Arturo Vidal’s brace. After a last 3-match winless run in the ongoing WC qualifiers, Chile were successful in clinching a victory. Vidal opened the scoreline in the match for the hosts Chile in 10 minutes with a header.
In the 76 minutes, Edison Flores’s goal from outside the box equaled the scoreline by 1-1 for Peru. In the 85 minutes, Vidal scored the winning goal for Chile with a powerful low grounded shot from outside the box.
