Liverpool have agreed a £12.5 million transfer fee for Southampton’s right back Nathaniel Clyne. The England right-back was heavily linked with Manchester United but Liverpool have raced in front to sign the 20-year old defender.
Clyne is expected to sign a 5-year contract with the Anfield club and will complete his medical next week.
Liverpool were in the market for a right-back ever since releasing Glenn Johnson from Anfield. Southampton had previously rejected two bids in region of £10million.
Liverpool did not give up and came back with a strong £12.5million bid which now the club has accepted. Clyne will follow Roberto Firmino to become Liverpool’s sixth summer signing after James Milner, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Adam Bogdan already agreed to join Anfield next season.
The trend seems similar for Brendan Rodgers as he bought too many players last season but this season it looks more promising as he has gone after quality as well rather than only buying players to increase his squad size.
Clyne is tipped to be one of the best right-backs, English game has ever seen and to represent Liverpool at an early age must pave the way for him to go on and achieve great things in his career.
Liverpool are currently negotiating with Sevilla in order to force a move for star striker Carlos Bacca as well. The Columbian will return from Copa America 2015 and will decide on his future.
Elsewhere, Inter Milan playmaker Matteo Kovacic remains a long-term target for the Reds.
