The English club broke its transfer record to bring the Ghana international to England from French club Rennes in 2010. The Black Cats had to pay £13 million after he impressed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup where he scored three goals in his country’s brilliant run to the quarterfinals. The fee eclipsed the £10 million that Sunderland paid to bring Darren Bent to the club from Tottenham the previous year.
