Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville has named a shocking challenger for the 2022/23 Premier League title alongside heavyweights Manchester City and Liverpool. Neville believes Tottenham Hotspur would be a surprise package to break City and Liverpool’s dominance in England. None outside of these two have won the Premier League since Chelsea last lifted the title in 2016-17 season.

City and Liverpool have since won five Premier League titles between them, establishing a duopoly over it. But Gary Neville has cited Tottenham’s summer transfer business to pick them as the title challengers. Spurs have splashed around £100 million in the market for the acquisitions of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence. The North Londoners have further landed Ivan Perisic and Fraser Foster for free and Clement Lenglet on loan.

Gary Neville feels Tottenham the ‘only club who could challenge’ City, Liverpool

Tottenham have been serious in the market after Antonio Conte clinched an unprecedented fourth place finish for the club last season. The manager, as was promised has been given a free hand in the transfer market for making the signings that would fit his system.

The Italian has beefed up every department with the six signings so far as Spurs boast a healthy depth in their squad. Richarlison adds to the already fierce attack of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski who led them to the fourth place finish last season. Perisic and Spence have reinforced the wings for Tottenham, whereas Lenglet could provide another option for Conte at center-back.

Gary Neville has now given his verdict over Tottenham’s all-round transfer business, claiming they could even topple the likes of City and Liverpool for the title. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Neville said, “I think Ivan Perisic [is a good signing]. I’ve got Tottenham Hotspur finishing third in my head. Because of Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison added into [the mix of] what they’ve already got.

They have already got Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son who are world class. They have two world class players up top, and they’ve now added to it with Perisic and Richarlison.”

He further supported his argument saying, “I think Tottenham are the only club who could challenge, they won’t finish above Liverpool, but they could if somehow Liverpool wobble or get an injury to Virgil Van Dijk, then Tottenham could [challenge]. They are the only club who could potentially.”

Tottenham have had a mixed preseason, winning two, losing one and drawing one in their four friendlies. Nonetheless, Conte will be eager to start the new season which commences this weekend on a strong note. Tottenham host Southampton in their Premier League opener on Saturday, 6 August.
