Have Everton finally accepted defeat in their battle to keep John Stones at the Club?
Jose Mourinho and Chelsea have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of England International John Stones after it was earlier confirmed that Everton have now set their sights on signing Celtic’s central defender Virgil van Dijk.
According to Mail, Roberto Martinez wants to sure up his defense as Chelsea begin to assualy the Merseyside club with an improve bid for Stones. Earlier, a £20million was rejected by Everton which now is thought to be bettered by Chelsea.
Having already lost Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin this summer, Martinez cannot afford to lose his best defensive option after Phil Jagielka. With that in mind, a move for Van Dijk may not be a bad option regardless of the fact whether Stones stay at Goodison Park or not.
Van Dijk is regarded one of the finest young defenders in Europe after helping the Scotish side win back-to-back league titles since his move Groningen. A fee of £10-15million would be enough to sign the Dutchman, who has also been previously linked with Manchester United.
Have Everton surrendered to the cash-rich Chelsea?
Not long ago Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho conceded that his rivals are trying to buy the league away from Chelsea. Having said, Mourinho has been known to spend quite a fortune in recent years and signing Stones for an elevated price may add to his spending.
Everton have still not forgotten how Chelsea held them to hostage in Romelu Lukaku’s transfer deal and they are determined to extract the best value for John stones.
In the end, however, as much as they want to hold on to Stones, Chelsea’s financial powers will allow them to sign the 21-year old defender even against Everton’s wish.
