Jackson Martinez SNUBS Arsenal and AC Milan; signs for Atletico, agent confirms
Henrique Pompeo, the agent of FC Porto frontman Jackson Martinez, has confirmed that the Colombian footballer has chosen to sign for Atletico Madrid, instead of AC Milan and Arsenal. Pompeo also mentioned that the deal was sealed with Atletico on Tuesday, with the transfer fee of approximately £25 million. He said, “It was finalised today. We want to thank AC Milan for their interest right up to the end, we feel very honoured by it, but you can’t be in two places at once.”
Before Copa America, Pompeo had claimed: “There is a club that’s willing to pay £24.7m for the buy-out clause.” This club was assumed to be either Arsenal or Milan, however Atletico Madrid has taken both the clubs with surprise by stealing Jackson Martinez right under their noses.
Regarding Martinez’s preference to join Atletico over other suitors, Pompeo gave his opinion, “It’s a very big club, which has done important things in the league and in Europe. Jackson is going there to also achieve great things and to bring the best out of himself to become even better. That’s his dream and he’s very excited. He’s really happy.”
Pompeo also holds Atletico boss Diego Simeone in high regards. When asked about the Argentine, Pompeo showered him with compliments, he said, “He’s a coach with a winning mentality. Now it just remains for Atletico and Porto to make the official announcement and after the Copa America, where Martinez is representing Colombia, he will be presented with his new shirt.”
Martinez had a stellar 3 years at Porto, where he scored 67 goals in 90 league matches, remaining the top scorer in Portugal for three consecutive seasons. He also scored 7 goals in 8 matches in the Champions League last season, with a memorable goal against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals.
Martinez is going to replace Mario Mandzukic at Atletico, who left for Italy last week to join Juventus on a 3 year contract. He is currently at Chile, where he is set to start for Colombia, in their quarterfinal match against Argentina on June 26, at the 2015 Copa America.
