Manchester United are in desperate need to sign a world-class central defender this summer and the two most linked players with a move to Old Trafford are Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi.

Initially Hummels was odds on favorite to join Manchester United. But over the period of time, Otamendi has emerged as the potential signing for Louis Van Gaal but Otamendi’s £35million release clause still threatens to blow away the deal.

However, release clause might not be the only thing stopping United from making a bid for the Valencia star. German media have reported that, Hummels has handed a transfer request at Borussia Dortmund and wants to move to Premier League.

Since the news of Hummels handing a transfer request, Manchester United have reconsidered their transfer strategy and now are interested in signing the German world cup winner instead of the Argentine.

Given the financial constraints and the current lot of defenders at the club, United could only sign either Hummels or Otamendi this summer. United have been always interested in signing Hummels and Otamendi only emerged as a target due to German’s unwillingness to leave Signal Eduna Park.

Hummels will be available for United on a significantly lower fee than Otamendia. Since Hummels’ contract is due to run out soon, United could sign the German for a fee close to £25million, which will appeal to Old Trafford hierarchy more than Otamendi’s £35million asking fee.

It is yet to be seen, if United could construct a move for either of the two central defenders. However, Louis Van Gaal can be assured of signing a world class player if United are able to sign either Hummels or Otamendi this summer.
