Young PSG defender Marquinhos’ agent has dropped a huge hint that his agent could be on the move in the summer, mentioning Manchester United as his possible suitors.
(The Brazilian was reportedly a target for the Red Devils in the winter transfer, however there was not concrete offer and the move remained limited to paper talk. Marquinhos also attracted interest from other clubs during the summer, but the Ligue 1 champions’ president Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s reluctance to part with the player saw him continue at the Parc des Princes.
David Luiz and Thiago Silva are Laurent Blanc’s first choice at the heart of Parisiens defence, with Marquinhos being overlooked. Giuliano Bertolucci, the 20-year-old’s representative, has now claimed that the former AS Roma centre-half is unhappy with the limited gametime, and could seek pastures new in the imminent summer.
“Last summer the president of PSG [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] stated that Marquinhos was unsellable; we will see what he thinks next June,” told RMC.
“So many [clubs] want him, including Manchester United. What is certain is that Marquinhos wants to become the best defender in the world.
“He is still not at the level of Thiago Silva and David Luiz, so for this reason he respects the choices of the coach.
“But he doesn’t want to spend much more time on the bench. If necessary, he can play also as a full-back or a wide midfielder.”
A product of the Corinthians youth academy, Marquinhos was snapped up by AS Roma for a fee believed to be in the region of €4m. After a breakthrough season with the Giallorossi, French side PSG signed the teenager for a astounding £31.1m, thus making him the fifth most expensive defender of all time back then.
Manchester United’s defensive lapses could lead them moving for the talented Brazilian in the summer. If Louis van Gaal manages a top four finish, the possibility of continuing in the Champions League with his new club would sure tempt the youngster.
The Red Devils are also linked with moves for Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi.
Marquinhos has made 15 league appearances for Laurent Blanc’s side this term, netting once.
