Defending Champions and UEFA Champions League runners up Atletico Madrid were completely ignored as it was all about Real Madrid and their star player Cristiano Ronaldo in the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP) Gala Awards for the 2013-14 season on Monday.
The Champions of Europe, who also won the Copa Del Rey won as many as five awards out of the twelve followed by Sevilla with two and one each from Atletico, La Liga runners up Barcelona, Celta Vigo, Levante and Granada.
Cristiano Ronaldo completed a hat-trick of awards as he won the best player in La Liga last year along with the best forward and his goal against Valencia fetched him the goal of the season.
Ronaldo was voted as the footballer of the year. Cristiano’s backheel against Valencia was voted Goal of the season ahead of Lionel Messi’s freekick against Almeria and Giovnco dos Santos against Valencia. Ronaldo, who ended the last season as the Golden Boot winner for scoring the most number of goals was also named as Best Forward of the year ahead of Atletico’s Diego Costa and Real Sociedad’s Carlos Vela.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was awarded the best Midfielder of the year beating Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Atletico Madrid’s Gabi. Fellow Real Madrid defender settled for the best defender of the season as he was voted more than Atletico trio of Filipe Luis and Miranda. Current Real Madrid Goalie Keylor Navas, who had the most saves for Levante in La Liga last year was awarded the best Goalkeeper of the last season ahead of Willy Cabellaro and Thibaut Courtois.
The only awardee from Atletico Madrid is their manager Diego Simione who won the best manager award and Andreas Iniesta won Barcelona’s lone award by winning the best attacking midfielder award.
