UCL Round of 16 (First Leg) Match Report: Benfica vs Borussia Dortmund

Portuguese hosts Benfica edged past German club Borussia Dortmund to win 1-0. Kostas Mitroglou put ahead the hosts while Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to score from a penalty.

Borussia Dortmund suffered a 1-0 defeat against the hosts Benfica in the 1st leg of UCL 2016/17 round of 16 at Lisbon. Kostas Mitroglou broke the deadlock for the hosts at 48 minutes while Dortmund missed a chance to equalise the scoreline form a penalty on 58 minutes.

Despite dominating all over the park, Dortmund failed to open their scoreline. The visitors mostly controlled the match as they had several chances for scoring but wastage those chances resulted a defeat for them in the away match.

Meanwhile, Benfica had only shot on target (out of 5 shots) in the entire match which was also resulted the goal for them. However, Dortmund managed to put 5 shots on target out of 14 shots still failed to score.

The first half ended a goalless for the both sides while the visitors failed to take opportunities from their several chances. Even there was no shots on target in that half from the both sides.

On 3 minutes in the second half, Benfica broke the deadlock. Luisao’s header from a corner-kick first stopped by Mitroglou with his left foot at just 2 meter away from the goal and then Greek striker placed the ball into the goal without any barrier.

After that goal, Dortmund became more aggressive but still failed to find a clinical finish.

10 minutes later that goal, Dortmund was awarded a penalty after the hosts’ midfielder Lubomir Fejsa made a handball into the box. Having an awful night, Aubameyang made a shot in the center of the goal which was saved by the hosts’ goalie Ederson.

5 minutes before that penalty, Aubameyang missed a great chance in the clash between him and Ederson as the Gabonese made a shot over the post.

In the closing minute, Ederson made a brilliant save in the box. The visitors’ substitute Christian Pulisic made a shot from outside the box which took a huge deflection from Jimenez’s foot, but the hosts’ goalie made a brilliant save in the bottom left corner.

With their dominating football, Dortmund had got chances after chances to make the match for them. But their wasting opportunities resulted an away defeat for them.
