UEFA Announces Final Nomination List Of The 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player Of The Year Award

On Thursday (15th August), the UEFA has revealed the three-man shortlist for the 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award. Apart from the two superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil van Dijk is the third player in this nomination list.

On 29th August 2019, during the group stage draw in Monaco, the UEFA will announce the 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award winner. Besides this, the UEFA will also announce the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and UEFA Champions League positional award winners.

Messi, Ronaldo and Van Dijk will fight for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award

Liverpool and Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk was in the top form during the last season. He played the massive role for the Premier League side Liverpool to win the UEFA Champions League 2018/19. In the final of UEFA Champions League 2018/19, he won the Man of the Match award. The Dutch footballer also played a significant role for the national side as they were the runners-up in the inaugural UEFA Nations League (2018/19).

Meanwhile, the Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has returned to the top three nominations of this award. In the last year, he missed out the top three positions while the Real Madrid and Croatia star Luka Modric won that trophy. Messi (12 goals) was the top goal-scorer in the UEFA Champions League 2018/19. However, his Spanish club Barcelona was eliminated from the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Messi (36 goals) was also the top goal-scorer in the La Liga 2018/19 while his team Barcelona won the crown. Messi also won the European Golden Shoe 2018/19.

In the meantime, the Juventus and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo also maintained his form. Portugal won the inaugural UEFA Nations League (2018/19) under his leadership. Ronaldo (three goals) was also the leading goal scorer in the National League Finals (knockout stage). Also, he further helped his Italian club Juventus to win the Serie A 2018/19.

The UEFA also revealed the points of the seven other footballers who failed to earn the top three positions for this award. These are as follows:
