UEFA WC Qualifiers round-up: Spain, Italy, Croatia clinch victories; Wales earns just a point
Italy beat Macedonia by 3-2

On Sunday (09/10/2016) the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification from UEFA zone showdown witnessed Spain grabbing a convincing victory while Italy securing 3 points courtesy an injury time goal. Croatia, meanwhile, escaped with only one goal victory while Wales failed to win against Georgia.

Spain clinched a comfortable victory over the hosts Albania in the Group G encounter. After the first half ended with a goalless, Diego Costa broke the deadlock in 55 minutes. Poor clearance by the Albanian goalkeeper Etrit Berisha was cost a goal for the hosts. 8 minutes later, Nolito strengthen Spain’s victory in this game through adding another goal.

With an injury time goal, Italy secured a 3-2 victory against the hosts Macedonia in another Group G encounter. Andrea Belotti put Italy ahead in 24 minutes which was answered with two back-to-back goals by Ilija Nestoroski and Ferhan Hasani in 57 and 59 minutes respectively as the hosts took 2-1 lead. In the 75 minutes, Italy got back on the track with a goal from Ciro Immobile. In the first minute of the injury time, Immobile scored the winning goal for Italy through a header.

Also hosts Israel beat Lichtenstein by 2-1 in the same group encounter. Israel’s striker Tomer Hemed scored a brace at 3 and 16 minutes while Maximilian Goppel scored the only goal for the visitors in 49 minutes.

On the other hand, Wales drew against Georgia by 1-1 in the Group D encounter. Also in the other Group D matches, Republic of Ireland beat Moldova by 3-1 and Serbia secured a 3-2 victory over Austria.

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale put Wales ahead in the 10 minutes through a header. Tornike Okriashvili replied for Georgia also through a header in 57 minutes as the visitors made 1-1 in the scoreboard, which remained till the end of the match.

With the help of James McClean’s pair, visitors Republic of Ireland beat the hosts Moldova by 3-1. With an early goal at 2 minutes of the match, Shane Long put ahead the visitors which replied by the hosts’ striker Igor Bugaiov at the injury time of the first half. In the second half, James McClean’s two goals in 69 and 76 minutes were secured a 3 points for the visitors.

Also the hosts Serbia beat Austria by 3-2. Serbian and Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the leading goal for Serbia at 6 minutes which was leveled by Marcel Sabitzer in 15 minutes. Mitrovic scored his second goal in this match through a header at 23 minutes. Marc Janko once again leveled the scoreline for the visitors in 62 minutes. In the 74 minutes, Serbia once again took the lead on the scoreboard with the help of Dusan Tadic’s goal which had no answer for the visitors till the end of the match.

In the Group I match, Croatia escaped against the hosts Finland with an only goal victory which was scored by Mario Mandzukic in 18 minutes of the match.

Hosts Iceland also beat Turkey by 2-0 in another Group I match. Turkey’s centre back Omer Toprak’s own goal in the 41 minutes put Iceland ahead by 1-0. 3 minutes later, Alfred Finnbogason extended the lead for the hosts to 2-0.

In another Group I match, hosts Ukraine beat Kosovo by 3-0 with the goals from Artem Kravets (31′), Andriy Yarmolenko (81′) and Ruslan Rotan (87′).
