Vincent Kompany has emerged as one of the top candidates for the Tottenham job as the club is preparing their shortlist ahead of the summer. As Daniel Levy sent another man packing, the north Londoners are searching for a new boss—the fourth in four years. Following a foul-mouthed tirade directed at the players and the club’s administration before the international break, Antonio Conte was fired this week.

As they continue to compete for the top four and a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season, Tottenham are left without a manager. Vincent Kompany, who has led Burnley to the top of the Championship, is certain to manage in the Premier League next season for the Clarets. However, it might Spurs instead, if they manage to get the ex-Man City captain on board.

Tottenham impressed with Vincent Kompany’s team-building at Turf Moor

The Clarets, who have lost only two of their 37 league games this season, are quickly on their way to securing automatic promotion. Levy has reportedly taken notice of Vincent Kompany’s rebuilding of the Turf Moor team after their relegation last season. At Anderlecht, the former Manchester City player started his managerial career before moving back to England at the start of the current campaign.

If Burnley are promoted, Kompany, however, is unlikely to receive significant transfer funds, which could hinder his goals for the upcoming season and make him available for employment elsewhere. And Levy, at Tottenham, is building a reputation of financially backing his manager after providing a staggering £150m for transfers to Conte last summer.

Spurs are considering a number of managers, not the least of which being the recently fired Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann. Thomas Tuchel took the German’s place, although the 35-year-old is still well-regarded and was once a source of fascination for people in north London.

Mauricio Pochettino, who had great success at Tottenham before being fired in 2019, would possibly consider making a comeback. The Argentine is currently jobless but still enjoys the respect of many players and fans in north London. Pochettino had difficulties with the way the club was operated in the past, so if he were to return, he might look for reassurances.

Recently, Manchester City gave Vincent Kompany and Burnley a wake-up call in the FA Cup, but the Catalan was full of praise for his former player’s efforts. Guardiola even went on to claim that the Belgian is bound to manage City one day, and that it is ‘written in the stars’. The Spaniard had said after the game:

“All of us here and the fans are happy he will be back. He will be back sooner or later. His destiny to be the manager of Manchester City is already written in the stars. It’s going to happen, I don’t know when but it is going to happen I am pretty sure. It is my feeling, maybe I am wrong. He has the attributes, work ethic, knowledge of the game, well respected, experienced. Doing what he has done is so difficult and he is doing really well. He knows the club, the environment, the fans, what our people need. The destiny is there.”

Tottenham’s season will be completed by Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini, who also discussed the shortcomings of the previous administration. Stellini, who will now oversee the remaining ten games of the season for Spurs, said:

“I’m sad, when you change manager in the middle of the season everyone feels responsible. My relationship with Antonio is the same because we are friends. I feel honoured to be trusted with the team to the end of the season. The players and everyone have to do more.”
