Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has hailed the Indian selectors to bank on wrist spinners for the upcoming series against West Indies starting on February 6.
Last week the selectors announced the 18-member squads for the ODI and T20I series against West Indies in which they made the wholesale changes in India’s bowling attack. The 21-year old Ravi Bishnoi received his maiden India call-up while Kuldeep Yadav also made a comeback in the ODIs. Notable that India faced a thrashing 0-3 defeat against South Africa in the ODI series.

The bilateral series is the best time to test fringe players, opines Bharat Arun
In an interview with News9, Bharat Arun believes that these bilateral series are the best time to test fringe players. He also explained that the rise in cricket analytics helped the opposition batters to read the variations of wrist spinners. That’s one of the reasons why the pair of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have declined in the past couple of years.
“Wrist spinners have done very well for Team India. But then there was point when they were a little stagnant. Because with a lot of analysis coming up, they knew what was coming and hence even the batters started working towards it. But again, it’s about evolving. With the World Cup in mind, if India can get around with all the talented bowlers, and identify the players who will play for them in the World Cup and so I feel that there is no better way than the bilateral ODI series to test who are those players,” Bharat Arun said.

Arun also welcomed the move to bring Ravi Bishnoi in. Bishnoi picked 24 wickets in 23 IPL matches with an economy of 6.97. He also believes that Kuldeep will turn things around despite his poor in the past couple of years
“I feel it is a very encouraging move that they have called up Ravi Bishnoi and brought back Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep had made some mistakes, he had stagnated for a while, but he has got a lot of talent and is probably one of India’s brightest prospects for the future. It’s great that he has come back. I hope he has learnt some valuable lessons for him to do well now,” he added.
The first ODI between India and West Indies will be played on February 6 at Ahmedabad.
