Chelsea and Barcelona become the latest clubs to register interest in LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David. Last month, the player’s agent confirmed that his client will be leaving the club in search of a bigger club. Since then Three Premier League clubs and two La Liga giants have shortlisted Jonathan David for the summer transfer.
The 22-year-old Canadian striker is leading the Ligue 1 charts this season with 12 goals in 21 matches. He has scored 3 Champions League goals and 1 goal in French Cup as well. Jonathan David has been in sensational form his national team this season with 7 goals in 12 matches. His emergence as one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 has raised his transfer value from £15 million to around £50 million in just two years.
The player’s agent also confirmed that David is not looking for a January move but is in favor of starting negotiating this month. The French champions are struggling with just 32 points from 21 matches this season and lying in 8th position in the league table. Finishing in the top-three position is still a realistic target for Lille but they are already 5 points behind 3rd placed Marseille who have played a game less. Lille are also willing to sell their star player this summer but will demand a much higher fee as Jonathan David’s contract expires in 2025.
Chelsea To Replace Romelu Lukaku With Jonathan David Next Season?
According to a report from TSN, Chelsea and Barcelona have contacted Lille over the player’s valuation this week. The Blues are linked with multiple forward options since Romelu Lukaku’s controversial remarks last month. Chelsea spent £98 million last summer to bring back the Belgian striker from Inter Milan but the player has been trending at Stamford Bridge for wrong reasons. He expressed his desire to return to Inter in the future after failing to settle at West London. Since then he was dropped for a crucial Liverpool fixture and was drafted back into the first team after an apology.
But Lukaku has been struggling to perform since that incident and other forwards Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic are not helping the cause. This has resulted in Chelsea linking with Erling Haaland, Paulo Dybala, and now Jonathan David. Thomas Tuchel will face big competition for the player’s signature and need to sell key forwards to fund this deal in the summer.
La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on Jonathan David who are in the market for the new striker but the Canadian international is not the first priority for them. Real Madrid are strongly linked with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland where Barcelona are going for Alvaro Morata this summer. So it seems that the Premier League move is on the card for the player with all top-three London teams chasing Jonathan David.
