England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan has lauded Joe Root’s leadership skills as he believes that Root should continue as a leader in the longest format.

Notable that after a 0-4 loss in the Ashes, Joe Root’s position as captain is under scrutiny by various experts and media. Though Root had a terrific year as a batter as he scored 1708 runs in Test cricket in the year 2021 with 6 hundreds. In an interview with The Times, Eoin Morgan spoke about his leadership qualities.

“I think Joe Root is a brilliant leader. At a time where Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith are put up on this pedestal, I know Joe Root is as good as these guys,” Eoin Morgan spoke to The Times.

Joe Root captained England in 61 test matches with 27 wins however he failed to win an Ashes series in his three attempts as captain.

“I spent a lot of time with Joe over the years, watching him go about his business, the way he conducts himself around his teammates, the example he sets, the amount of responsibility he takes on. He is a very good leader. If Joe were asking for advice, I’d be telling him he can do the job, and he should continue doing it,” Morgan added.

England hasn’t won a Test match in Australia since January 2011 though Morgan stated that it was a completely different Australian team back then. He lauded the Australian pace trio- Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. In the 5-match series, England failed to reach the 300 mark even once in their 10 innings.

“As a spectacle, it was disappointing because no one likes one-sided sport. It’s just not enjoyable. As for the 2010 series, the Australian team we played back then was nothing like the present Aussie team, especially when you think of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc and their attack,” he stated.

England’s next assignment in Tests will be 3-Test match series in West Indies in March. England is currently playing 5-match T20I series against West Indies which is levelled at 1-1 after 2 matches.
