IND VS AUS: Ravichandran Ashwin- India took a 1-0 lead in the Border Gavaskar Trophy by bowling out the Australian side for their second-lowest total in test matches against them.
India’s ace spinner Ravi Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to take 450 test match wickets, he achieved this feat by breaking former Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble’s record. Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra said Ashwin has been one of the biggest match-winners after Kumble for India.
R. Ashwin picked up a total of eight wickets in India’s victory including a fifer in the second innings at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. The off-spinner Ashwin is now behind Kumble’s 35-wicket haul record in test matches, Ashwin is seventh overall in the most five-wicket haul list with his 31 fifers and second among active players. English pacer James Andreson tops the list in most five-wicket hauls in test matches among active players with his 32 fifers.
Ashwin picked up a fiver this time around as India smashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the 1st Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur.

Aakash Chopra acknowledged Ashwin as one of the biggest match-winner India has ever produced-
“Ravichandran Ashwin has picked up 450 wickets and unfortunately, we are still not celebrating him enough. Just like Rohit Sharma the Test opener, similarly Ravichandran Ashwin the Test bowler. One of the biggest match-winners that India has ever produced. Kumble sahab and then Ravichandran Ashwin.” said former Indian opener Chopra
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma picked three spinners for the first encounter against Australia in Border Gavaskar Trophy including Ashwin. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja picked a fifer in the first innings of the test match and is just one dismissal away from his 250 test match wicket.
“When you talk to a lot of cricketers, they say that these pitches are very bad, if you bowl here you will get wickets. Not everyone gets wickets. Four to five spinners play in a match, he still picks up the most wickets”, added former Indian cricketer Chopra
“It means he knows how to pick up wickets and in different, different conditions as well. Any batter might come in front of him, he finds a way to pick up wickets. One thing has definitely changed, although you shouldn’t compare eras, the defensive game of the batters has gone slightly down.” he further concluded
In the Australia tour of India 2023, on the 3rd day, the Australian team were bowled out for 91 runs in 32.3 overs in their second innings and the Indian side took the 1-0 lead in the four test matches series.
