Ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, various Ex-cricketers have shared their view on the ‘Impact Player’ rule, which will be added in this edition, Delhi Capitals (DC), Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly believes everyone is excited about the new rule, and he doesn’t think new rule will impact the importance of all-rounders.
Earlier, DC’s head coach, Ricky Ponting shared his view on the new rule and said that the ‘Impact Player’ rule will make all-rounders less valuable, while after adding on this new rule, different sides can change any player from their side in between the game with the five names mentioned by their skipper, and the introduction of this player will be called ‘Impact Player’, while he can bat at any position and bowl full quota of overs after introduction.

Former Indian skipper believes ‘Impact Player’ rule will not affect all-rounders-
“Impact Player’ is new so let’s see how it works.
“All of us are excited and want to know how to get the best out of it. Allrounders will remain. I don’t think ‘Impact Player’ will reduce allrounders. Being an all-rounder is about ability,” stated Ganguly in an interview with TOI.
IPL management announced the ‘Impact Player’ rule just before the Mega Auction in December 2022. The substitute player according to the new rule has to be an Indian player unless the playing XI contains less than four overseas players in the lineup.

“It [usage of Impact Player] depends if you bat or bowl first. So at the toss, we will be putting in a bowling-first team and a batting-first team.
“And obviously if you bat first, you’re probably going to sub in a batter. Or if you bat first and lose an early wicket, you might want to bring in a batter straight on top of that. So there are a number of different ways to use it,” Ponting said on the ‘Impact Player’ rule.
“It actually almost negates the role of allrounders in the game now. So unless they’re absolutely world-class and they’re getting picked either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy, then I don’t think you’ll see many, many teams this year actually use the guy that might bat at seven and maybe bowling over or two. Because you don’t need those guys anymore,” said the former Australian skipper.
Alongside, ‘Impact Rule’ BCCI has also announced that captains can name the playing XI after the toss.Whereas, IPL 2023 will kick off on 31st March, with the opening game between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), while David Warner-led Capitals will start their camping against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 1st April.
