During the third tenure as WWE Champion, John Cena ended up becoming the longest-reigning champion holding the belt for more than a year. The reign began at 2006 Unforgiven pay-per-view where he defeated Edge in a TLC match. It continued until The Great American Bash in 2007 where he successfully defended against Bobby Lashley. But he tore his pectoral muscle and was forced to relinquish the belt in October.
