Update On WWE Royal Rumble 2020 Match Card Before This Week’s SmackDown
Tonight’s episode of SmackDown will take place with a big match having Royal Rumble implications attached to it. This is the final WWE SmackDown of 2019 as well as the decade that will feature a Triple Threat main event match.
It will happen with the lineup of Daniel Bryan vs. King Baron Corbin vs. The Miz to determine a new number one contender for WWE Universal Champion “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt.
The winner of tonight’s match will challenge for the championship at the 2020 Royal Rumble pay-per-view scheduled on January 26th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that WWE will hold off Daniel Bryan vs. The Fiend to let the storyline play out. Hence the rematch is happening at Royal Rumble 2020. So Bryan with a changed look and attitude is the favorite to win tonight’s main event and go on to headline the first PPV event of next year.
As noted before, the other planned match for Royal Rumble will see WWE RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch competing against WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Asuka. The latter name agreed to compete in a singles match after the champion issued a challenge on Raw.
As the setup is complete, the match is now reportedly booked for the Rumble pay-per-view. It will also be the one-year anniversary of Asuka defeating Lynch by submission, last year at the same Rumble event.
Two other championship matches were noted for 2020 Royal Rumble. Braun Strowman vs. WWE Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura and Lacey Evans vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley are these two speculated matches. The mentioned titles will be on the line.
These two matches were originally scheduled to take place at TLC 2019. But Strowman’s injury in December pushed WWE officials to push back the feud whereas they also wanted to save Bayley vs. Evans for Royal Rumble.
Brock Lesnar is also expected to put his title on the line but there’s no update on his potential challenger from Monday Night Raw.
The Observer also reported that the host venue of Royal Rumble 2020 will have the capacity to keep 36,000 fans. They mentioned that WWE will likely announce closer to 46,000 in attendance.
The stadium is yet to be sold out as there are around 3,000 tickets left as of mid-week. As always, this show will also kick things off for WrestleMania 36.
