Albie Morkel Opens Up Why CSK Is A Successful T20 Side

Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel, who spent six seasons for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has recently opened up the reasons why CSK have achieved huge success.

Albie Morkel, the elder brother of former Proteas pacer Morne Morkel, was a great all-rounder in limited-overs cricket. While the elder Morkel participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for nine successive seasons (2008-2016), his best time was for CSK where he spent from 2008 to 2013. During his tenure, CSK won two IPL trophies (2010 and 2011) and one Champions League T20 trophy (2010).

Morkel played 92 T20s for CSK where the right-arm pacer took 91 wickets, and the aggressive left-handed batsman scored 909 runs (average 23.30) with a strike-rate of 142.25.

Apart from winning now-defunct Champions League T20 tournaments for twice (2010 and 2014), CSK is the best consistent side in the IPL history. While they have won three IPL trophies, the second most successful team in this tournament history, they have never finished below the top four. In fact, excluding two seasons along with the two-year suspension period, CSK are the common team in the every IPL finals.

Albie Morkel has credited the captain, MS Dhoni, for CSK’s massive success in T20 cricket. Morkel called him one of the best limited-overs players in the cricket world. Morkel believes that Dhoni knows very well how to bring out the best from his players.

The former CSK all-rounder told a sports magazine, “He (Dhoni) plays a big role. We all know how big Dhoni is in India. He is one of the best T20 and white-ball players ever to play the game; and if you get him as a leader, it is going to bring success as he knows how to get the best out of his players.”

Consistency is their secret: Albie Morkel about the success of CSK

CSK is known as one of the teams who always put strong faith in their core players. That’s why MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo etc. have mostly served for this IPL franchise. Albie Morkel didn’t forget to mention this crucial point.

He added, “It all comes from keeping your core group of players together for a long time and have the same captain, Dhoni, for all seasons except for the two years when they weren’t part of the competition.

“Consistency is their secret. Over the last few seasons, they have made the finals eight times out of 10.”

IPL 2020 was initially scheduled to begin on 29th March 2020. But due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, the beginning of this tournament has been postponed till mid-April. Observing the situation, the future of IPL 2020 is under the dark cloud.

India Vs South Africa 2020: Albie Morkel Predicts ODI Series Result

While the South African team is getting ready for the away ODI series against the hosts India, former Proteas all-rounder, Albie Morkel feels that it is almost impossible to beat India in India.

India and South Africa both are ready to end the ongoing cricket season with the three-match ODI series in India. Both teams experienced completely different results in their respective last ODI series. While the hosts South Africa beat Australia in the three-match ODI series by the 3-0 margin, the visitors India suffered the 3-0 defeat in the three-match ODI series against the hosts New Zealand.

India will win it 2-1: Albie Morkel about the ODI series between India and South Africa

While Albie Morkel feels fantastic to overpower Australia in the home ODI series, he also believes that it is almost impossible to beat India in India. However, Morkel is expecting some fights from the South African cricketers in the ODI series against the hosts India. He has predicted that the series margin will be 2-1 for India.

Morkel said according to Sportstar, “It was sort of a mixed summer before the new coaching staff took over. Obviously, they had a fantastic win against Australia in the ODI series, after losing the T20 series badly. So, I’m unsure.

“Even if a team is in top form, beating India in India is almost an impossible task. It’s going be a tough series for them, but I do expect them to at least compete. India will win it 2-1, but South Africa should compete, especially now that they have the confidence after the series against Australia.”

The India-South Africa ODI series will begin on Thursday (12th March) at Dharamsala. They will play the next two matches at Lucknow and Kolkata on 15th and 18th March respectively.

Last time South Africa played the ODI series in India in October 2015. It was the five-match ODI series and the visitors Proteas side won that ODI series by the 3-2 margin.

Four Well-Known Cricketers to Play Only One Test for their Country

These days, with cricketers willing to commit themselves to the T20 leagues across the globe, many of them have not played the longest format of the game for years.

These players could be successful in Test cricket. Instead, they chose not to give it a chance and focused more on white-ball formats of the game.

On that note, we will take a look at four players who have played only one Test match for their country.

Note: Only those players whose lone test match came before January 1, 201,4 have been considered here.

IPL 2018: Five Greatest Turnarounds in the History of T20 League

Since the inception of Twenty20, the game is not over till its actually over. This is why the shortest format of the game has offered. It eventually grabbed eyeballs following the thrilling finishes owing to nerve-racking moments. However, Indian Premier League (IPL) is no different.

Over the years we have seen some incredible comeback victories from situations where teams had almost lost the match.

A combination of pressure-induced mistakes and individual brilliance wrote these scripts.

Let us relive five such instances when the teams achieved what looked impossible in IPL:

Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (Chennai, 2012):

Batting first, Royal Challengers posted a massive target of 205 runs with half-centuries from Chris Gayle (68) and Virat Kohli (57).

However, in reply, Chennai got off to a good start with Faf du Plessis scoring 71 runs. Suresh Raina (23) and MS Dhoni (41) also made aggressive, but inadequate contributions around him.

Muttiah Muralitharan (3/21) ensured that CSK could never cease the advantage in the middle overs, and when Zaheer Khan dismissed Dhoni off the last ball of the 18th over, 43 were still needed to win with Dwayne Bravo unbeaten on a 10-ball 13 and Albie Morkel yet to face a ball.

RCB skipper Daniel Vettori handed the ball to Virat Kohli in the 19th over due to lack of better option.

Morkel hammered 28 runs off the over, including three huge sixes and two boundaries as CSK stormed their way back into the match, leaving 15 to win from six balls.

A combined effort from Ravindra Jadeja and Bravo sealed the game for CSK, what even the most enthusiastic CSK supporters were probably doubted.

Chennai took the game out of nowhere mostly dominated by RCB.

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Ahmedabad, 2014):

Put to bat first, Rajasthan Royals posted 170 runs on the board with contributions from Sanju Samson (37), Karun Nair (44).

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a flier as they scored 121 runs in 14 overs without losing any wicket.

It looked like a cakewalk for KKR with 5o needed from six overs and power-hitters to follow. However, RR skipper Shane Watson had some other plans.

He handed the ball to the 42-year-old Pravin Tambe, who turnaround the game for his team.

He had Manish Pandey stumped down the leg side, Yusuf Pathan caught and bowled the first ball through a brilliant catch diving in his follow-through, and Ryan ten Doeschate lbw first ball to complete a spectacular hat-trick and script a dramatic twist in the match as the Knight Riders slumped from 121 for no loss to 123 for six in two overs.

The setback proved too tough for KKR to revive as they managed to score only 160 runs.

Kings XI Punjab vs Chennai Super Kings at (Abu Dhabi, 2014):

Glenn Maxwell

Batting first, Chennai posted a towering total of 205 on the board while banking on Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum.

Many of the fans thought the game was over, Glenn Maxwell-David Miller partnership had other things in store.

They were reduced to 52 for three after a brilliant bowling effort from the Chennai bowlers.

But it was Maxwell’s day as luck favoured him the most. He played a gem of a knock of 95 runs off just 43 deliveries but left it unfinished.

Then it was the Miller show which turned upside down and left CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni stunned.

KXIP chased down the staggering target with seven balls to spare.

Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 190 for three in the first innings, led by Chris Gayle (61) and Cheteshwar Pujara (51), and boosted by a quickfire 38 from AB de Villiers.

However, Punjab struggled at halfway mark losing four wickets at the score of 68.

The equation steepened by the end of the 13th over- reading 96 off 42 balls- but David Miller, accompanied by Rajagopal Sathish, now had his eye in and a license to break free.

The southpaw unleashed some brutal hitting as the bowlers went in search of leathers.

The next four overs went for 77 runs as Miller moved from 27 off 17 to 95 off 37 balls. With Punjab needing 19 off 18, Kohli ran out of ideas and handed the ball to Gayle.

This prompted Sathish to join the party as he struck two fours and a six before giving Miller the strike with three to win.

KXIP won the game with two over to spare, however, at one stage they looked totally out of the equation.

Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians ( Wankhede, 2018):

Dwayne Bravo

Batting first Mumbai posted a moderate total of 165 runs after a late cameo from Krunal Pandya. Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan also chipped in with crucial contributions.

However, it was a sad story for Dhoni-led revamped Chennai side. CSK lost wickets at regular intervals as debutant Mayank Markande and Hardik Pandya returned with three wickets.

Struggling 118 for 8 in 16.3 overs, Bravo had something different in mind.

After a slow and steady start, he absolutely hammered the bowlers to all-round the park. He struck seven sixes and three fours on his way to scoring 68 runs off 30 balls.

With 27 runs required from 12 balls, Rohit Sharma handed the ball to his best troops.

However, Jasprit Bumrah failed to find his line and length as Bravo took him for 20 runs before getting out in the last ball.

However, Kedhar Jadhav finished the job with a four and six in the last over as they scripted a historic comeback.

Albie Morkel snubs criticism against Morne and AB de Villiers

Former South African cricketer   Albie Morkel has rubbished criticism hurled at his brother Morne Morkel and South Africa captain AB de Villiers  after the Proteas disappointing  One Day International tour to West Indies in the triangular series that involved Australia as well.

Albie said there was a criticism about his brother  and AB de Villiers on a newspaper that dwarfed supremacy of de Villiers and Morne.

“They are the best, plain and simple,” Albie Morkel said.

“Personally, looking from the sidelines, I don’t see a powerful enough unit. They lack that cohesion, that strong bond. There are some superb individual performances, but not enough great team efforts.

“It just seems as if everything right now is cast in uncertainty and that uncertainty affects their performances.”

Albie said AB de Villiers record since he made his debut for the South Africa underlines  his ability. He inspires and is leading his team from the front. “I think he averages about 62 as a skipper” Albie said.

De Villiers has played  87 matches as  a captain of South Africa. He scored 4219 matches  at an average of 65.92 at a strike rate of 111.05.

Albie said  without going deeper of the problem media is targeting individuals to make them a scapegoat.

The former all-rounder thinks the blame could be given to the entire team and the squad but  blaming proven star like De Villiers and lanky Morne Morkel is unfair.

South Africa has already had went down to the sixth position in Test ranking since their 3-0 loss to India and  2-1 to England at home and fourth position in the ODI ranking.

Morkel is South Africa’s most dependent bowler after Dale Steyn is not fully recovering from his injury. South Africa got sensational service of Imran Tahir and youngster  Kagiso Rabada.

Morkel has taken 181 wickets in 108 matches at an average of 24.60. In 2015 World Cup he has taken 17 wickets at an average 17.58 and was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker.

However, both de Villiers and Morkel failed to perform up to their expectations in the Carribean.  De Villiers has averaged 24.20.

Morne Morkel was seated throughout the series. On Friday, in the last game of South Africa against West Indies  Morkel conceded more than 68 runs taking only one wicket.=
