Highest Paid Footballers As Per Forbes’ Highest Earning Athletes: August 2020

Forbes has released their yearly ranking of the top 100 highest-earning athletes and fourteen highest paid footballers appear on the list, with two of them earning over $100 million over the year, which incredibly is more than the GDP of Tuvalu, an entire country! This list includes the 14 names who are among the highest paid footballers in the world at the moment.

While some people think that this amount of money is grotesque for a single athlete to earn, it is justified by all the revenue they generate and is objectively logical. If a club or sponsor judges that a player is worth investing money into, then it is unfair to blame the player, especially as many players give back to their communities and to charities.

Highest Paid Footballers As Per Forbes’ Highest Earning Athletes: August 2020

The first player on the list of highest paid footballers from the UK site Findbettingsites is Cristiano Ronaldo, who earned $105 million, thanks to a $60 million annual salary and endorsements from Altice, Nike and others that net him the remaining $45 million. At a time when most players have many tattoos, Ronaldo stands out in that he has none. The reason for this is that he gives blood on a regular basis and you can’t give blood if you have tattoos.

Secondly is his greatest rival, Lionel Messi. Messi has not built himself as a brand as much as Ronaldo which explains why he gets $32 million from his partnerships with Adidas, Gatorade, Huawei and Mastercard, $13 million less than the Portuguese. On the other hand, the Argentinian winger has the biggest salary in the world, winning $72 million a year. Since the very beginning of his career, Lionel Messi has been among the highest paid footballers.

The third player is unsurprising and there is a massive drop below him. It is, of course, the Brazilian Neymar who has been among the highest paid footballers. He plays for the very, very rich PSG. He is paid $70 million a year, more than even Ronaldo and more than double anyone outside the top three.

His attitude is sometimes criticised by pundits because he is not conventionally hardworking but some of his skills, tricks and goals are genuinely unbelievable. When he is at his best, he can toy with defenders as well as anyone in history, and he often leaves opponents on the floor after performing what has been called ‘ankle breakers’.

Earning $35.5 million since June 2019, Mohammed Salah is fourth on the list. The twenty-eight-year-old is sponsored by Adidas, DHL International, EA and more for a value of $12 million but it is his annual salary of $23.1 million.

He has had many doubters like the rest of his Liverpool team but last season’s Champions League victory and winning the Premier League this season has silenced all of them. He is a deadly finisher and a very powerful runner, not only very fast but also very strong. Some say he is too selfish with the ball, but the best players must be, and it is proof of the confidence he has in himself and that the salary he is paid justifies.

Fifth on the list is the French sweetheart and by far the youngest on the list Kyllian Mbappe. He also plays for PSG and is paid $20.8 million per year as well as $13 million coming from his partners EA, Hublot and Nike. Mbappe is an electric player who can sometimes jump into life and destroy defenders.

Being just twenty-one years of age, he is already a big game player and he performs when his teams need him, showcased at Monaco, PSG and for France. His performance against Argentina was absolutely scintillating, assisting one goal, scoring himself and winning the penalty for another goal in the famous 4-3 win. Mbappe, although still very young, has been among the highest paid footballers since his miraculous season with AS Monaco.

Next is the Spanish maestro Andres Iniesta. At the age of thirty-six, he is undoubtedly past his best, but a transfer to Vissel Kobe has allowed him to keep shining and if anything, he has to rely more and more on his incredibly fast football brain and his technical ability to make a difference in games, which he still manages to do with flair.

Even the most biased Real Madrid fans are aware that Iniesta is a truly special player, and his partnership with Xavi in the centre of the Barcelona midfield was a treat to watch. He earns $26.6 million a year from his club as well as $3 million from sponsors. Both, Xavi and Iniesta were among the highest paid footballers during their stint at FC Barcelona.

Rounding out the top ten are Paul Pogba, Oscar and Antoine Griezmann. They earn $28.5 million, $27.5 million and $26.7 million respectively and interestingly, these players all net proportionally more from their salaries and bonuses rather than their sponsors and partners. These superstars are among the highest paid footballers in 2020.

Barcelona Announce Signing Of Antoine Griezmann From Atletico Madrid

F.C Barcelona have paid Antoine Griezmann’s €120 million release clause to bring him to Camp Nou.

World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann who rejected a move to the Camp Nou last year, secures his transfer to Barcelona this summer window. Griezmann had caused much conflict when he released a video last year to announce his staying at Atletico Madrid, leaving the Barca fans and board furious.

The French star has signed a five year contract with the club keeping him at the club until 2024. F.C Barcelona released a video starring Griezmann titled “Life is all about second chances”.  Barca have set his release clause to a whooping €800 million.

Real Sociedad will be getting approximately €24m (£21.5m) due to the 20 percent sell-on clause in the initial deal to sell the player to Atletico.

However, there are still complications in the move, with Atletico demanding €80 million more. Atletico have said that Barca had an agreement with Griezmann before his release clause dropped to €120 million on 1st June, and hence they will need to pay the prior clause which was €200 million.

Cerezo, Atletico Madrid president, said the club had proof that Griezmann and Barcelona negotiated early and planned to request a greater fee.

“If the club have made this statement it’s because there’s evidence,” he told RAC1.

“We have to study it and we’ll demand the amount we consider to be necessary.”

Barcelona are planning to unveil Griezmann on Saturday at the Camp Nou and have still not responded to the claims by Atleti.

The 28 year old scored 133 goals in 257 appearances for Atletico Madrid as the club’s fifth-highest goalscorer. During his tenure he won the Europa League, a Spanish Super Cup and a UEFA Super Cup with the Madrid side.

F.C Barcelona are still highly linked for a move for Neymar Jr. to bring him back to the Camp Nou which could see one of Coutinho or Dembele being swapped with PSG. With big moves Barcelona are aiming to win it all after being disappointed last season.

Barcelona’s Offer Made Me Lose Sleep – Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann, who was highly linked with Barcelona in the summer transfer window has revealed that he was in complete dilemma after the Spanish giants approached him.

Griezmann eventually decided to stay at Atletico Madrid.

When it looked like Griezmann to Barcelona is just only a matter of time now, the Frenchman stunned the La Liga champions and signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid. However, he has said that it was the toughest decision of his football career.

Griezmann told Telefoot:

“There were times when I wasn’t feeling good. I spoke about it with my wife. I woke her up at three in the morning and asked her, ‘What are we going to do?’ Because I tried to talk about it, but she can’t help me, she doesn’t know what I’m thinking. My parents, either. Some members of my family wanted to see me [at Barcelona], others no, so, it was difficult.”

The World Cup winner also revealed that as soon as he was linked to Barcelona, the Atletco Madrid fans desperately wanted Griezmann to stay and will do everything in order to make him stay. And that won his heart.

“Everyone was calling me, seeing how I was, asking me what I was thinking. Each time, they said to me, ‘We want you to stay. We’ll do everything for you to stay. We’re ready to do a lot of things.’ That touches you. In the Champions League, we want to do better than we did last year when we weren’t able to get past the last 16. I think that it was mostly my fault because I wasn’t good mentally, and in the league — as usual — to challenge [Barcelona and Real Madrid].”

Atletico Madrid is not enjoying a good start to this season as they won only 2 matches in their first 5 matches and are at 5th in the table.

90% of the People Thinks Griezmann is on the Same Level as Messi and Ronaldo – Lucas

Atletico Madrid forward, Antoine Griezman had made headlines a couple of days ago after he said he’s on the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, his France and Atletico team-mate, Lucas Hernandez has supported the forward, and he believes the same.

Lucas Hernandez has supported his team-mate Antoine Griezmann.

It all began when Antoine Griezmann did not get nominated for FIFA’s The Best top-three despite winning the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Frenchman is disappointed since then and also said he believes he shares the same table with Ronaldo and Messi. Many have criticised Griezmann after the statement including the Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos.

However, Lucas feels there was nothing wrong with the statement and claimed 90% of the world believes Griezmann is on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

“I think that 90% of the world believes that Griezmann is at the same level as Messi and Ronaldo. Maybe Sergio Ramos doesn’t like it, that Antoine has spoken his mind. We know that he defends his interests. He’s in a rival team, the team of the capital. We know that there’s a great rivalry between the teams and it’s normal that he defends his interests and we defend ours.”

Meanwhile, Griezmann didn’t have a good start to the season for Atletico. He has managed to score only one goal in the six matches he played. His side Atletico is also suffering, as they sealed only five points in their first five games.

Atletico Madrid will face Getafe on Saturday where they will get an opportunity to close the gap. Moreover, they will take on their city rivals, Real Madrid in the first Madrid derby of the season on 29th September.

So far as it looks, there would be some battle of words between Ramos, Lucas and Griezmann.

Sergio Ramos Criticizes Antoine Griezmann’s Huge Claim

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos has criticised Antoine Griezmann after the player said he shares the same table with that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Griezmann feels he’s on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

The Atletico Madrid forward has been heavily criticised by many after making the considerable claim. The one who has done the most is his city rival’s captain. Ramos feels Griezmann should look some of his team-mates to learn values. The Real Madrid captain told Sky Sports,

“Ignorance makes you very bold. When I hear this kid talk, I remember players like (Francesco) Totti, Raul, (Gianluigi) Buffon, (Iker) Casillas, (Paolo) Maldini, Xavi or (Andres) Iniesta who have won everything but not a Ballon d’Or. Everyone is free to express their opinion, but I think he should take the advice of (Diego) Simeone, (Diego) Godin or Koke, who represent the values that serve them (Atletico Madrid) well. I have always said that he is a great player and I wish him the best.”

The Spanish captain has also responded to Gareth Bale’s comment on Ronaldo and explained what the Welshman meant.

“The hole he leaves has been filled, even though we know how big [that hole] is. We have a great squad. Cris gives you many things but maybe he takes things from you as well – very few, but some. We were more direct before, counterattacking, using his pace. Maybe now we’ve adapted to the squad: we have more possession, other ways of hurting opponents.”

He further added,

“We appreciate and feel affection for all the great players who have played for us – and he is one of them – but life goes on without them. We wish him the best, so long as it’s not against us. What can I say about Cris? He marked a wonderful era, he broke practically every record, but we can’t live off that.”

Sergio Ramos and his men have moved on wishing Ronaldo all the best. But it will be interesting to see how they cope up in the Champions League where Ronaldo made a huge contribution throughout his career in Los Blancos.

I’m Already on Same Level as Messi And Ronaldo – Antoine Griezmann

World-Cup winner, Antoine Griezmann has dropped a bombshell saying he is on the same level as that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Griezmann feels others players can get to the level of Ronaldo and Messi too.

Despite failing to get nominated in the top-three for FIFA The Best award, Griezmann feels he can win the Ballon d’Or.

However, the Ballon d’Or is determined by votes from the journalists, and the Frenchman believes it has more prestige and history. Griezmann told AS,

Antoine Griezmann

“I think the Ballon d’Or has more prestige and history. Here’s three months left to give everything. It is clear that I am a different player than Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar or [Kylian] Mbappe. I’m at the top, but I can improve. I seek to be as complete as possible. I’m not going to score 50 goals. But I’m looking to help offensively and work for the team.”

The player also claimed he already sits with Ronaldo and Messi and more players will be on the same level as them shortly.

“I think I already sit where Messi and Cristiano are. And I know other players are going to come for sure. I want to improve, I want to win and I want to continue like this, playing in this way.”

The 27-year old forward was heavily linked with Barcelona in the 2018 summer transfer window. In the end, he decided to reject the La Liga champions and announced it in his through a documentary. He finally broke his silence and revealed he rejected Barcelona to give tribute to his team-mates and head coach, Diego Simeone.

“Saying no to Barcelona gives greatness to Atletico, Cholo [Simeone], my team-mates. I trust them, and we contribute to each other a lot. I stay where they give me more love. If it was for money, I would have gone to China. It was a very important decision for my future. You do not only look at one year; you do it thinking about four or five. It wasn’t as easy as choosing a candy.”

What I Have To Do More To Win The Award – Antoine Griezmann

World Cup winner with France, Antoine Griezmann feels he deserved to be in the top three of the FIFA Awards nominees and criticised the governing body for overlooking him.

Griezmann won the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA World Cup this year.

Antoine Griezmann had a year to remember so far and the best in his career. The Atletico Madrid and France forward won UEFA Europa League, Super League and the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Achieving so much in a year, Griezmann felt shocked to see not his name in the top three.

However, he believes he has a realistic chance of winning the prestigious award one day. Griezmann told L’Equipe,

“Yes, I’m thinking about it, especially as I’m getting closer and closer to it. When I finished third in 2016, I had lost two finals. Now, I’ve won three. The Ballon d’Or is a prestigious award, and for a player, it’s the summit. There’s nothing better, nothing bigger. There can be trophies in your league, the World Cup, the Euros; it’s not the same. I would ask myself what I would have to do more. I have won three trophies, I’ve been important in decisive moments. But it’s not me who votes. Comparing with 2016, I have to be in the final three.”

The Frenchman also felt ashamed not to see a France player getting nominated in the top three despite winning the World Cup.

“It’s bizarre, and a shame, it’s FIFA who award the trophy right?. And the World Cup is organised by FIFA, right? We won the World Cup, and there is no Frenchman at the end. It’s a choice, but it’s surprising there’s no world champion.”

However, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and Luka Modric are nominated for FIFA The Best Men’s Player of the Year.

Paul Pogba will Always be Welcomed at Barcelona – Luis Suarez

Barcelona forward, Luis Suarez says France midfielder, Paul Pogba will always be welcome at the Spanish club. However, he also criticised Antoine Griezmann’s style of rejecting Barcelona in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Paul Pogba was linked highly with a move to Barcelona in the 2018 summer transfer window.

In the 2018 summer transfer window, Pogba was linked highly with Barcelona. But in the end, he stayed at Manchester United, as Jose Mourinho didn’t want to let the midfielder go.

However, Pogba’s linking to Barcelona doesn’t end so soon. And Suarez has said the doors are always open for Pogba at Camp Nou. Suarez told RAC1,

“Pogba’s an elite player who’s won everything. He has a lot of quality, and he’s one of the references at United. I think he would like to be competing for more than he is at the moment. He’s not a player that belongs to Barca, but he would always be welcome.”

Things started to get tougher for Paul Pogba at United after his relationship with Mourinho took a turn.

After the manager criticised the Frenchman in the summer, it was known that Pogba wanted to leave right after that.

Meanwhile, praising Paul Pogba, the former Liverpool striker revealed he was shocked after he heard Griezmann is not joining Barcelona.

“It was a surprise [that he stayed at Atletico] because of what he had said. But you have to respect his decision, which he made with his family. He earned everyone’s respect. There were some people saying I would leave if he came in, but I don’t know where that came from. If he came, he would have been well received because he’s an excellent player.”

According to the reports, Griezmann was all set to join the La Liga champions. But in the end, he decided to remain at Atletico Madrid, finally announcing his decision in a documentary called “The Decision.”

Griezmann: I’ve won 3 finals, I should be Balon d’Or finalist

Madrid, Sep 5: Atletico Madrid’s French forward Antoine Griezmann believes he will never have a chance to win the Balon d’Or award if he doesn’t win it this time.

In an interview to the French magazine L’Equipe, Griezmann said that 2018 was the best year of his career, reports Xinhua news agency.

“It’s the most successful year. I’ve scored more goals but in terms of trophies, it’s the best,” he said, making reference to forming part of an Atletico Madrid side which won the Europa League and the European Supercup, while France were the winners of this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Griezmann was nominated in 2016 but failed to win after Real Madrid beat Atletico in the Champions League final, while France was defeated by Portugal in the European Championship.

“If I compare 2016 to this year, I feel I should be among the three finalists. In 2016 I lost two finals and was chosen among the top three. This year I’ve won three finals…” he commented.

“It won’t be unfair (if he doesn’t win), but I’ll wonder what else I have to do. I’ve won trophies and was decisive at key moments. But then I don’t vote,” he added.

Griezmann was also asked about the FIFA award ‘The Best’ whose three finalists are Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and Luka Modric.

“It’s strange…This is a FIFA trophy; FIFA organizes the World Cup. We won it and there is not one France player on the final list,” he said.

Griezmann Deserves To Win Ballon d’Or – Lucas Hernandez

Lucas Hernandez feels his Atletico Madrid and France team-mate Antoine Griezmann deserve to win Ballon d’Or and he should have been in the nominees of the top 3.

Hernandez feels his team-mate should have been nominated.

Hernandez and Griezmann  won the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA World Cup  together this year, with both playing a major role. And after being denied a nomination in the top 3, Hernandez and Atletico Madrid are in full support of the France forward.

Griezmann once made it to the top 3 in 2016 along with Ronaldo and Messi. But in the end, it was Ronaldo who named as the winner. And Hernandez believes he should have been nominated this time around too.

The left back told France football:

“Antoine deserves it. He is my favourite. He has been a key man in all of the major competitions he has played in this year. He has won almost everything and contributed everywhere. Griez has been so consistent. He has been up at the top for two or three years.  He has taken another step since 2016 when he was in the final of the Euros and third in the Ballon d’Or vote with France Football.”

Antoine Griezmann

Meanwhile, Hernandez himself has made it to the top in the recent years. He is now an established performer for club and country. Despite living in Spain since the age of four, he decided to represent France. And in the end, it was everything worth it for the left-back.

However, he has revealed that he was preparing himself to represent Spain. But it all changed when France manager Didier Deschamps approached him.

“I couldn’t disappoint him. From the start, he picked me for my qualities as a defender, but he asked me to do different things, which meant taking risks in attack. Even Diego Simeone told me that he discovered new things about me during the World Cup.”
