CPL 2020: Top 5 Jaw-Dropping Moments In The Tournament

CPL 2020 just finished on last Thursday (10th September). Trinbago Knight Riders recorded their fourth CPL trophy after winning the final match of the CPL 2020 by eight wickets (against St Lucia Zouks).

During that 24-day tournament, we experienced many great performances, including some jaw-dropping moments which were unforgettable for the cricket fans.

Rashid Khan started with an incredible sixer

Afghanistan cricketer Rashid Khan is not only famous for his dominating leg-spin bowling, but he is also a very good lower-order batsman. Rashid started the CPL 2020 journey with an incredible sixer.

It was the second match of the CPL 2020, where the defending champions Barbados Tridents were facing St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. In the first innings of that match, Rashid came to bat at the no.10 position when his team was struggling on 116/8 in 14.4 overs. On the fifth ball of that over, Rashid faced Alzarri Joseph and hit a six on that first ball after successfully playing a helicopter flick that traveled over square leg for the maximum. He scored 26 not out off 20 balls that helped his team to manage the first innings total of 153/9 (20 overs).

IPL 2020: 5 Cricketers To Look Out In The Tournament Based On Their CPL 2020 Performances

The CPL 2020 just finished on Thursday (10th September) afternoon after Trinbago Knight Riders claimed their fourth CPL trophy after beating (by eight wickets) St Lucia Zouks in the final. In just more than a week later, IPL 2020 will begin in the UAE that will run between 19th September and 10th November 2020.

Eight franchises are getting ready to begin their journey in the IPL 2020 while the CPL players are also ready to join their respective IPL sides. While some of the cricketers highly impressed in the CPL 2020, the IPL franchises are expecting similar strong performances from them in the forthcoming IPL season.

The Caribbean all-rounder Andre Russell is now the crucial name of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In the IPL 2019, Russell won the Most Valuable Player award for his incredible all-round performances. He maintained the same status in the CPL 2020 where he served for Jamaica Tallawahs.

In the recently concluded CPL tournament, Russell scored 222 runs (average 44.40) and also took 3 wickets in nine matches. He was once again very dangerous with the bat in that tournament as he had the 141.40 strike-rate in that tournament. Russell smashed three half-centuries in that tournament. Though he started the tournament with a couple of slow knocks, which was the very opposite nature of his familiar batting, soon Russell picked up his tempo and brought up his dangerous aggressive batting.

CPL 2020: Top 5 Wicket-Takers In The Tournament

The 24-day-long CPL 2020 finally ended on 10th September 2020. At the end of this tournament, Trinbago Knight Riders won their fourth CPL title after winning the final match of this tournament where they beat St Lucia Zouks by eight wickets.

Bowlers played very important roles in the entire CPL 2020, especially the spinners. Though many foreign cricketers were absent in this tournament, majorly due to the pandemic, the limited overseas bowlers still dominated in this tournament.

Here we are talking about the top five most wicket-takers in the CPL 2020

Kesrick Williams (St Lucia Zouks) – 13 wickets

The 30-year-old right-arm pacer Kesrick Williams, who served for St Lucia Zouks in the CPL 2020, finished as the joint fourth most wicket-taker in the tournament and most wicket-taker among the Caribbean bowlers in that tournament. The Caribbean pacer got 13 wickets in 11 innings with an average of 23.46 and an economy rate of 8.92. His bowling figures in the tournament were 34.1-0-305-13.

CPL 2020: Top 5 Run Scorers In The Tournament

The eighth season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2020) just finished on 10th September after Trinbago Knight Riders clinched their fourth CPL title by beating St Lucia Zouks (by eight wickets) in the final of this tournament at Brian Lara Cricket Academy (Tarouba).

We didn’t see many high-scoring games during the CPL 2020 as most of the batsmen were not consistent enough during the entire tournament. While many overseas players were unavailable for this tournament due to the pandemic, the Caribbean cricketers are dominating in the most run-scorer list of this tournament.

Here we are talking about the top five most run-scorers in the CPL 2020

Nicholas Pooran (Guyana Amazon Warriors) – 245 runs

The young Guyana Amazon Warriors’ wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran was mostly inconsistent during the entire CPL 2020. Still finishing in the fifth position in the most run-scorers list of the tournament, Pooran scored 245 runs in 11 innings with an average of 27.22 and strike-rate 123.73.

In that entire tournament, Pooran only played 20+ innings for twice, 68 runs against St Lucia Zouks and 100 not out against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The left-handed wicket-keeper batsman was the only player to score a century in the CPL 2020.

KKR Sunil Narine Will Increase Difficulties For Batsmen In IPL 2020: Gautam Gambhir

Cricketer-turned-Commentator Gautam Gambhir believes that the West Indies allrounder Sunil Narine will be difficult to tackle in the IPL 2020 because of the new addition in his bowling tactic. Deep Dasgupta, the former cricketer, also agrees with Gambhir’s, stating that offspinner will be impressive in the upcoming IPL edition.

Sunil Narine is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 and so far he is having a decent tournament. After CPL, he will move to Kolkata Knight Rider’s camp in UAE to play the IPL.

While speaking on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir and Deep Dasgupta shared their views on the increased effectiveness visible in Sunil Narine’s bowling in the ongoing CPL.

Deep Dasgupta pointed out that Narine has improved his pace which is why he has impressed with his bowling more than batting.

“In batting, he is continuing to perform the way he was doing earlier. But I have found his bowling the most impressive. The pace at which he is bowling, the control he is showing, if you consider everything, I have found his bowling more impressive than his batting,” Deep Dasgupta said.

Gautam Gambhir on Sunil Narine:

Gambhir said that Suni Narine’s tactic to hide the ball during the run-up would make it difficult for the batsman to read him. As per him, the batsman would find it difficult to know the spin moment of the ball.

“For me, the most important thing is that when Sunil Narine is hiding the ball during his run-up, it will increase the difficulties for the batsmen.

“It will be difficult to find which ball will go away and which ball will come in. Because the later you see the ball in the hand, the more difficult it is for the batsmen,” Gautam Gambhir concluded.

Meanwhile, IPL 2020 is scheduled to begin on 19th September in the UAE.

Suresh Raina Is The Nicest Cricketer I Have Ever Met: Daren Sammy

West Indies cricketer Daren Sammy recently expressed that Suresh Raina is the nicest cricketer he has ever met. Former Indian all-rounder Raina had announced his retirement from international cricket on 15th of August at just 33-years of age. Raina, who had travelled with the squad to UAE had later decided to skip the IPL and returned home citing ‘personal reasons’ which is believed to be a rift with MS Dhoni over his hotel room.

Daren Sammy is currently captaining  St Lucia Zouks in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) who are second on the table. Sammy had recently alleged racism within the SRH camp and has been very vocal on the Black Lives matter movement.

For me, Suresh Raina is the nicest cricketer that I have ever met: Daren Sammy

The former West Indies skipper spoke his heart out and said Raina is the nicest cricketer he has ever met. He adores him for his humble nature. Darren Sammy feels the decision of Raina retiring at the same time as Dhoni shows the level of friendship and respect between the Indian duo,

“I know a lot of praises and best wishes have been going to MS Dhoni. But for me Suresh Raina is the nicest cricketer that I have ever met. Nicest international cricketer with full of grace, a very humble player and a very stylish batsman. Jonty Rhodes also rated him as the best fielder in the world. It’s important that we acknowledge his contribution to the game as well.” Daren Sammy told The Times of India.

“I guess for Raina and Dhoni to bow out almost at the same time and on the same day, it shows the level of friendship and the level of respect that Raina has for Dhoni. India lost two great cricketers in the form of their retirement.

“Dhoni I think will be impossible to replace specially as a captain and Raina for the entertainment he has provided over the years with his strokeplay and his fielding and he was something that was entertaining and exciting to watch.” he added.

IPL is the ‘Mecca’ of T20 cricket while CPL is the ‘Mecca’ of entertainment in cricket says, Daren Sammy

Sammy who has played in the IPL in the Sunrisers Hyderabad colours says IPL is the most lucrative T20 league in the World. However, playing in the CPL has its own fun to it mentioned Sammy.

“IPL is the ‘Mecca’ of T20 cricket while CPL is the ‘Mecca’ of entertainment in cricket. This year we had no funds but there is no experience like playing in CPL in front of a full house in the Carribean. In CPL, you have some of the biggest hitters and superstars of the world.

“IPL is the most lucrative in all of the leagues and it’s being played in India – a place where cricket is like a religion. Both have their own special identity. I have enjoyed playing in both the places,” said Sammy.

Darren Sammy had led his side to two world cup wins in 2012 and 2016.  The all-rounder has been outstanding in the T20 format playing 68 T20Is for the Caribbean team, managing to score 587 runs. Along with scoring so many runs, he is also good with ball managing to take 44 wickets at an economy rate of 7.31.

Pravin Tambe Has Passion Of Cricket At 48: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra who is a former opening cricketer turned commentator has mentioned that he would not even consider playing a competitive cricket match even at his age of 42, unlike Pravin Tambe who is of 48 years of age. Pravin Tambe became the first Indian to feature in Caribbean Premier League in 2020.  Pravin Tambe made his IPL debut at 41 and became the oldest IPL player in 2013.

The right arm leg break spinner became an overnight sensation after taking a hat-trick against KKR playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2014 even winning the purple cap after becoming highest wicket-taker till the 25th match of IPL 2014.  The leg break spinner has taken 68 wickets in 62 T20 matches at an impressive average of 22.7 across the globe. He did not even play first-class cricket before appearing in IPL.

Pravin Tambe’s Feat Is Spectacular And Cannot Be Thought Of: Aakash Chopra

In 2017 Pravin Tambe was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad and before IPL 2020 he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders. But BCCI may force him not to participate for KKR as he participated for Trinbago Knight Riders in Caribbean Premier League which is against the norms laid down by the board. He made his debut on 26th August and picked up a wicket in his maiden over.

Aakash Chopra expressed these comments on his YouTube channel besides praising Pravin Tambe’s spirit and love for the game.

“Pravin Tambe is real gold. 48 years and so many more days. I will not even think about it. Forget about me, no person will think about this,”Aakash Chopra

The 42-year-old mentioned that if someone approached him to play a match, he would abstain from doing so and would rather stick to commentary.

“I am 42 years old and if someone asks me to play an entire match, I would just fold my hands and say that I would rather do commentary.”

Aakash Chopra acknowledges and respects Pravin Tambe for his performances at such an old age besides maintaining fitness levels while stressing on the point that other cricketers much younger than him have taken up roles as a mentor.

“And it is not just me. You see so many people who have become mentors of teams and they are not yet 48 years old. So, at the age of 48 you are playing cricket, Pravin Tambe you are great Sir.”

He has played 33 matches in IPL and taken 28 wickets averaging 30.46 while playing for Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Lions.

Pravin Tambe performed exemplary well for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL which brought him into the limelight. Aakash Chopra appreciated his colossal passion for cricket, even though he was quite late to start playing in competitive matches.

“He started very late but he has a huge passion for playing cricket. And cricket has also loved him, a little late, but nevertheless it happened at least.”

The former KKR player was delighted that the Mumbai leg-spinner managed to pick up a wicket in his very first and only over for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL, where he played as a replacement for Sunil Narine.

“He played in place of Sunil Narine and took a wicket in his first-over itself, I think. Pravin Tambe plays for Trinbago Knight Riders, a 48-year-old guy.”

Pravin Tambe became the first Indian to play in the CPL when he turned out for the Trinbago Knight Riders against the St Lucia Zouks. He managed to dismiss the dangerous Najibullah Zadran to give his team an important breakthrough in his first and only over where he gave away 15 runs. Trinbago Knight Riders have won all the matches so far and are sitting at the top in the points table.

Warriors and Knight Riders have already met once in this season during the opening game of this tournament, where Knight Riders beat the CPL 2019 runners-up by four wickets.

There is no doubt about the present form of Knight Riders as they are the favourite for this match too. Meanwhile, the batting is the major concern for the Warriors and strong batting performance can help them to bring positive result in the upcoming match.

Shimron Hetmyer has suddenly lost his impressive touch, which we experienced during their first two matches in the ongoing season. Ross Taylor has failed to capitalise his starts while Nicholas Pooran has impressed with his batting in only one game in this season.

The veteran Proteas leg-spinner Imran Tahir, young Caribbean all-rounder Keemo Paul and Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq are performing consistently with the ball in hand.
