IPL 2017: Match 47 – Kings XI Punjab v Gujarat Lions – Predicted XI of Gujarat Lions

Gujarat Lions will look to restore some dignity when they come out to face off Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. Their exit was officially confirmed after the Delhi Daredevils dished out some brutal blows and defeated them by seven wickets.

The new franchise, who ended in the playoffs last season, had a very disappointing time and have only two games remaining excluding the upcoming match before they bow out of the tournament. While knowing that you are already out is never a great thing, they now have some opportunities to play the party spoilers for other teams that are currently in the race for the knockouts.

Previous Encounter:

Lions were on the losing side when they met Kings XI Punjab earlier this season. After putting the opposition to bat first, the Lions’ bowling attack failed to put out an impressive performance.

A super knock from Hashim Amla (65 from 40 balls) and supportive cameos by Shaun Marsh (30 from 24 balls), Glenn Maxwell (31 from 18 balls) and Axar Patel (34 from 17 balls) saw KCIP post 188/7 in 20 overs.

Lions did not show any intent with the bat and managed just 162/7 in 20 overs. Dinesh Kartik (58* from 44) was the only batsman who made some effort to challenge the opposition.

Recent form:

L L L W L (Most recent first)

Talking Points:

Injury to Brendon McCullum has come as a bad news for the Lions. He will miss the rest of the Indian Premier League season after suffering a hamstring strain against Delhi Daredevils. The 35-year-old was currently the 2nd highest run-scorer for the Gujarat Lions in 2017 with 320 runs from 11 outings. His absence will be felt.

Apart from that forced change, Raina would not like to change his lineup much. The XI which played against DD might have lost two in the row, but it is also the best possible combination Raina has at his disposal.

There is scope for experiments though. It would be exciting to see Ishan Kishan open the innings in the absence of McCullum along with Aaron Finch. Pushing Dwayne Smith down the order will no affect the team line-up much.

Predicted XI:

Ishan Kishan, Aaron Finch, Suresh Raina (C), Dinesh Kartik (WK), Dwayne Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner, Nathu Singh, Basil Thampi, Ankit Soni

IPL 2017 – Match 47 – Kings XI Punjab Vs Gujarat Lions – KXIP Predicted XI

Just when you thought that things are certainly over for the Kings XI Punjab, they manage to win a game out of nowhere and carry on with their unpredictable ways.

This time around as well, the story has been something similar for the Punjabis, after they pulled off a heist in Bangalore against the Royal Challengers, defending just a paltry 138.

Placed in a tricky spot with 10 points in as many games, the Kings XI need at least three more wins to certify their qualification for the playoffs. Doing so will surely not be easy, but against the out of form Gujarat Lions side, that has just lost Brendon McCullum to injury, it is their best possible chance of earning two points.

The two teams met previously on the 23rd of April in Rajkot which witnessed a rather one-sided victory for the Kings XI. Batting first, the visitors, on the back of a fluent half-century from Hashim Amla, got to a reasonable total of 188. The total included a vital cameo from Axar Patel lower down the order, as his knock of 34 turned out to be integral.

For the Lions, the chase never really got going and it was just Dinesh Karthik who displayed some steel in the middle with his valiant half century. Nevertheless, the Kings XI comprehensively won the game by 26 runs.

Recent form this season:

KXIP: W, W, L, W, L

GL: L, L, L, W, L

Talking Points:

Sandeep Sharma has been a consistent performer for the Kings XI over a really long span now, as he has bowled some awe-inspiring spells. He proved his calibre yet again when he got rid of the deadly trio of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in Bangalore to derail the chase for the hosts. Another fine bowling performance from the youngster will definitely put the side in a better position.

One member, who’s contributions have gone unnoticed has been Axar Patel. Axar has transformed from a plain left arm spinner into a value for money all-rounder, who can hit some lusty blows lower down the order. Throughout the season, Axar has played some crucial knocks in the last few overs of the game that have eventually turned out to be decisive.

KXIP Predicted XI:

  1. H. Amla 2. S. Marsh 3. M. Guptill 4. M. Vohra 5. G. Maxwell (c) 6. W. Saha (wk) 7. A. Patel 8. M. Sharma 9. S. Sharma 10. V. Aaron 11. I. Sharma.

IPL-10 Preview: Punjab Eye Desperate Win Against Gujarat

Mohali, May 6 (IANS) Desperate for a berth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs, a resurgent Kings XI Punjab will aim to go for the kill when they face a down and out Gujarat Lions at the I.S. Bindra Stadium here on Sunday.

Kings XI find themselves at the fifth spot in the IPL standings after registering two consecutive wins — against Delhi Daredevils by 10 wickets last Sunday and then a 19-run win against bottom-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru on Friday.

Gujarat Lions on the other hand, have just three wins from 11 games with six points to languish at the penultimate spot.

On Friday, all-rounder Axar Patel smashed a 17-ball 38 and then followed it up with 3/11, to keep the Punjab side’s chances of qualifying for the play-offs alive.

South African Hashim Amla has been their highest run-scorer with 316 runs, which included a century against Mumbai Indians while Martin Guptill, Shaun Marsh, Manan Vohra, Wriddhiman Saha all have chipped in from time to time but they need to be more consistent to lend depth to KXIP batting.

Skipper Glenn Maxwell is due for a big score after getting under 200 runs in 10 matches, with an unbeaten 44 being his highest score this season.

On the bowling front, medium pacer Sandeep Sharma’s brilliant three-wicket haul blew away RCB’s top-order to set up the win for Punjab before Axar cleaned up the middle order with his left-arm spin.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Lions are already out of contention and can only be the party spoilers if they win on Sunday. The Lions are coming into the match after three consecutive losses, which also includes the heartbreaking defeat against Mumbai Indians in a thrilling Super Over finish at Rajkot.

Despite posting 208-7, the Lions were blown away by Rishabh Pant’s sensational 43-ball 97-run innings and Sanju Samson’s 61 in their last match against Delhi and they would still be reeling from the seven-wicket loss.

Lions have also suffered a body blow losing their opener Brendon McCullum, who will miss the remaining matches after suffering a hamstring strain.

Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik have done the bulk of their scoring and with the likes of Ishan Kishan, Aaron Finch, and Dwayne Smith in their line-up, Gujarat have the ability to tear apart even the strongest of the bowling attack.

But more often than not, it is their inexperienced bowling unit which has cost the side dearly with the likes of Shardul Thakur, James Faulkner, Basil Thampi and Ravindra Jadeja failing to live upto the expectations of the side.

Kings XI Punjab: Glenn Maxwell (Captain), David Miller, Manan Vohra, Hashim Amla, Shaun Marsh, Darren Sammy, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Nikhil Naik, Ishant Sharma, Armaan Jaffer, Martin Guptill, Eoin Morgan, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Arman Jaffer, Anureet Singh, Mohit Sharma, K.C. Cariappa, Pradeep Sahu, Swapnil Singh, T Natrajan, Matt Henry, Varun Aaron, Axar Patel, Marcus Stoinis, Gurkeerat Mann, Rahul Tewatia.

Gujarat Lions: Suresh Raina (Captain), Akshadeep Nath, Basil Thampi, Shubham Agarwal, Dwayne Smith, Chirag Suri, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Manpreet Gony, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Shadab Jakati, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Dhawal Kulkarni, Praveen Kumar, Brandon McCullum, Pradeep Sangwan, Jason Roy, Jaydev Shah, Shelly Shaurya, Nathusingh, Tejas Baroka.

IPL 2017: Gujarat Lions Bowler Nathu Singh Ruled Out Of Remainder Of IPL

Nathu Singh, the Gujarat Lions fast bowler has been ruled out of the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a back injury. Nathu suffered the injury in the home game against Kings XI Punjab and did not play a game after then.

The tall pacer currently is the most economical bowler in the ongoing league with an economy rate of 3.75. However, he had just played two games before going down to an injury.

An injury to him is a big blow for the team, keeping in mind his mentioned record and poor show by Gujarat bowlers in the previous game against Delhi Daredevils, where they failed to defend a target of 209.

This was Nathu’s second stint in IPL, as he was the part of the Mumbai Indians franchise last year. Mumbai spent a total of 3.2 Crore to acquire his services but he did not play even a single game for them and was later released. In this year’s auction, his selling price dipped down as he was sold for 50 Lakhs to Gujarat Lions.

He sat out for the first few games but once given a chance, he shone for the team. An injury to him came at the wrong time and now he finds himself out of the league.

Nathu Singh came into limelight in the year 2015 when he made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy 2015/16 against Delhi where he bowled a spell of 87/7 in the second innings which impressed the selectors and within three weeks of his first-class debut, Nathu found himself drafted in the Board President’s XI squad against the visiting South African team, as chief selector Sandeep Patil spotted a spark in him.

He was given an extra rope in the Deodhar Trophy and was also given a place in the India Red squad for the first ever Pink ball Duleep Trophy game played last year. Despite oodles of chances, the pacer failed to grab the attention of the selectors again and now he is not in the ‘Special List’ of selectors.

He performed well in the two games and was looking good to attract the attention but injury has now come as a disappointment for him.

Nathu is not the only player from Gujarat franchise to be ruled out, as along with him, Brendon McCullum, their opener has also been ruled out of the T20 league due to a hamstring injury.

IPL 10: Brendon McCullum Ruled Out Of IPL Due To Hamstring Injury

The Gujarat Lions opener Brendon McCullum has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian premier League (IPL) due to a hamstring injury. The former New Zealand skipper suffered the injury during the last game against Delhi Daredevils, which Gujarat side lost by a margin of seven wickets, despite putting a huge total of 208 on the board.

McCullum being ruled out of the league have put the side in deep trouble as they now have only four overseas players in their team namely Dwayne Smith, Chirag Suri, Aaron Finch and James Faulkner as Jason Roy has left for England to participate in ODI series against Ireland whereas Andrew Tye was ruled out recently due to a dislocated shoulder. The franchise has to announce the replacement for McCullum in form of a foreign player as Roy will not return back to take part in IPL. The England opener will play county cricket instead, to prepare for the Champions Trophy.

Despite the Gujarat side not performing well, McCullum has been a key performer for the team as he scored 319 runs in 11 games but now with him being ruled out, we might see Ishan Kishan coming back to open the innings along with Dwayne Smith, who has not been in best of the form for the team.

At present, Gujarat Lions sit at seventh place on the points table with just three wins and eight losses and is currently the second team till now to be ruled out of the league, after Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The Gujarat-based franchise will take on Kings XI Punjab in their next contest in Mohali on May 7.

IPL 2017: Overall It Has Been A Disappointing Season: Dinesh Karthik

Very few people would have expected Gujarat Lions to be on the losing side after whirlwind fifties from Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik had propelled the team to 208 for 7 against Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The Lions were in a spot of bother initially when both their openers returned to the pavilion with just 10 runs on the board but Raina and Karthik took the Lions to a strong position with a 133-run partnership.

However, what unfolded thereafter not only left the Lions shell-shocked but almost every cricket fan and expert in the country. Riding on Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant’s blistering knocks, the Daredevils chased down the huge total with over 2 overs remaining. In fact, the chase was so comfortable that the home side needed less than run-a-ball in the last five overs and the architect of this chase were Pant (97 off 43) and Samson (61 off 31).

Barring the early dismissal of Delhi Daredevils skipper Karun Nair, who returned to the pavilion with just 24 runs on the board, the visitors had little to cheer about in the second half of the match and Dinesh Karthik rightly said that the latter half of the match belonged to the capital-based outfit.

“Ya I think the first half belonged to us but the second half went totally to Delhi. Credit to them, I think they played really well in the second half, there is no doubt about it,” the wicketkeeper-batsman said at the post-match conference.

The Tamil Nadu ace did not try to blame the dew after his bowlers were absolutely clobbered by Samson and Pant and instead gave the credits to the Daredevils batsmen.

“I don’t think there is much dew. I think it was good skill levels shown by their batsmen, I think they were hitting boundaries at will, making the ground look much smaller than what it is and that’s what has been the story of our season so far,” he said.

Ishan Kishan had done reasonably well after being promoted as an opener. However, the Lions tinkered their opening pair once again, promoting Dwayne Smith to open the innings with Brendon McCullum. However, the move backfired as both of them were back in the hut with only 10 runs on the board.

Speaking about the reason behind the decision to promote Smith, Karthik said:

“We wanted to bat Smith up the order. He is very comfortable in the order and we thought we would get off to a flying start. It didn’t happen really.”

With just 3 wins in 11 matches, the table-toppers of last year are out of the race for a berth in the playoffs. Expressing his disappointment over the dismal campaign, Karthik said:

“It has been an absolutely disappointing season, to say the least. We’ve just not turned up to the party and we are just not good enough to qualify for the play offs, as simple as that.”

“There are games where we lacked in batting and a lot of games in bowling but overall it has been a disappointing season. I think we’ll all come off as better players next year,” the 32-year old concluded.

IPL 2017: I Was Not Intimidated By Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli: Nathu Singh

The prospect of bowling against the likes of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli can unnerve the best of the bowlers in the world let alone a newbie who is still trying to find his feet at the highest stage of the game. However, Gujarat Lions fast-bowler Nathu Singh is an exception. The 21-year old right-arm pacer opened the bowling for the Lions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 27 and bowled a tight line, conceding just eight runs from his 2 overs which put pressure on Gayle and Kohli.

Both the batsmen soon capitulated under the pressure as Basil Thampi dismissed Kohli for 10 while Gayle was snapped up by Andrew Tye for 8. The hosts never recovered from those early setbacks and were all for 134 in the allotted 20 overs. In reply, the Lions rode on Aaron Finch’s whirlwind 34-ball 72 runs knock to chase down the total inside 14 overs

“When I was bowling, I did not have any pressure. I was just trying to concentrate on bowling the right areas. I did not want to think that it was Gayle and Kohli batting in front of me,” he told the Hindustan Times.

The Rajasthan pacer further thanked his skipper Suresh Raina for showing the faith in him and handing him the ball to bowl the first over.

‘I want to say thank you to Raina that he gave me the first over. I was nervous when I was about to bowl the first over in the match against RCB but he gave me the confidence,” Nathu said.

The ongoing season has seen the Lions relying heavily on uncapped Indian bowlers with the likes of  Nathu Singh, Basil Thampi, Shubham Agarwal and Pradeep Sangwan shouldering the bowling responsibilities. And Thampi has been nothing short of a revelation for them. The right-arm pacer, who has caught everyone’s attention with his fast yorkers and slower balls, has taken eight wickets from nine games so far.

Thampi is likely to spearhead the Lions’ pace attack for the remainder of the tournament and Nathu said he is relishing the prospect of bowling alongside the Kerela bowler.

“I get plenty of confidence when I am bowling with Basil Thampi. When we were in Pune with the Indian team the last time, we bowled together. He is determined to improve his performance every single time and that motivates me to do well as well,” Nathu said.

Gujarat Lions’ next match is against Delhi Daredevils on Thursday (May 4) as they would be looking to keep alive their hopes of making it to the playoffs.
