Latest ICC T20I Players’ Rankings: Virat Kohli Enters Top 10 Batting Rankings, KL Rahul Moves Up Three Spots

The no.1-ranked Test and ODI batsman Virat Kohli has re-entered the top-10 position in the T20I batting rankings. Also, KL Rahul has moved up three spots in the T20I batting rankings after showcasing consistent performances.

On Thursday (12th December), the ICC released their new T20I players’ rankings. The hosts India and the visiting side Windies just have completed the three-match T20I series that India won by the 2-1 margin.

Virat Kohli is now the no.10-ranked T20I batsman

Indian captain Virat Kohli won the Player of the Series award for his brilliant batting performances throughout the series. The right-handed batsman finished the series as the leading run-scorer as he scored 183 runs in this home T20I series. In these three matches, Kohli scored 94*, 19 and 70* respectively.

While Kohli is the present no.1-ranked Test and ODI batsman, he is now the 10th ranked T20I batsman after these top performances. The former no.1-ranked T20I batsman Kohli has moved up five spots to claim the latest T20I rankings.

KL Rahul is the no.6-ranked T20I batsman while Rohit Sharma slipped down

Meanwhile, KL Rahul was another batsman who mostly shined for India in that series. In the absence of the left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, the team management chose Rahul as his replacement in the playing XI. The right-handed opening batsman smashed two half-centuries in this series and finished as the second most run-scorer in this series. He scored 164 runs in this series as he played the knocks of 62, 11 and 91 runs respectively. While he has climbed up three spots, his present T20I batting ranking is no.6.

Though another Indian opener Rohit Sharma scored 71 runs in the series-decider game at Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), he has slipped down one spot to the no.9 position.

Virat Kohli Opens Up The Reason Of India’s Lower T20I Ranking

The Indian national cricket team are currently in very good form in all formats, especially after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. However, India are now in the no.5 position in the ICC T20I rankings. Ahead of the Hyderabad T20I against Windies, the Indian captain Virat Kohli has pointed out why India’s T20I ranking is lower.

At present, the Indian national cricket team is one of the strongest sides in every international cricket format. Since October 2016, India are holding the no.1 position in ICC Test rankings. The no.2-ranked Indian ODI team are fighting for a long time against the no.1-ranked ODI team England for the top ODI ranking position. But India are currently in the fifth position in the ICC T20I rankings. Though the Indian team is achieving success in T20I cricket, they are not consistent in this format.

This year, the Indian national cricket team has struggled in this shortest format of international cricket. While they have played 13 T20Is in 2019, India won seven matches and lost six games. Though India’s T20I chasing success rate (71.43%) is very well this year, their defending success rate (33.33%) is very weak in 2019.

We need to focus on batting first – Virat Kohli

Talking about their lower T20I rankings, Indian captain Virat Kohli has pointed out their wide experiments in this format. He has also admitted that they need to improve their first batting strategy.

Kohli said before the opening game of the three-match home T20I series against Windies, “We need to focus on batting first and defending low totals as well. Those are two things that we need to really focus on. T20 is a format where you can experiment a lot more than ODIs and Tests.”

Virat Kohli has also clarified that they have no focus on the T20I rankings as they haven’t played with the strongest T20I XI yet.

He added, “You want to give chances to the youngsters in the shortest format, we have not played the strongest eleven together in T20Is so rankings cannot be considered. We have the mindset that we will not focus on the rankings.”

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 is less than a year to go. Australia will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 from 18th October to 15th November 2020. Virat Kohli now wants to build up the strongest T20I side ahead of the next T20 World Cup.

Kohli said, “Now heading into the T20 World Cup, we need to take our best team to the field, we would probably be playing our strongest eleven going into the World Cup.”

India are ready to play the three-match home T20I series against Windies, starting on 6th December. Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Uppal, Hyderabad) will host the opening T20I of this series.

ICC T20I Men’s Rankings: India Drops Down to Fifth Position

According to the latest list issued by ICC, India has dropped three places down to the fifth spot in the expanded T20I men’s ranking. On the other hand, Pakistan has cemented its top position in the list issued.

The International Cricket Council unveiled the list of expanded T20I team rankings table with 80 teams. These teams will now be able to gauge their progress in a format recognised by the world body. The ICC acknowledges this format as the vehicle for the growth of the game.

India slips down to the fifth position while Pakistan strengthens their pole position

ICC T20I Men's Rankings: India Drops Down to Fifth Position 8

Pakistan, ICC T20 World Cup Champions in 2009, has a wider spread of 286 points to accommodate the additional teams. Whereas the next four teams are within two points of each other – South Africa (262), England (261), Australia (261) and India (260).

South Africa and India have swapped their positions in the expanded table. The launch coincided with the annual rankings update from where the series result of 2015-16 is removed. Meanwhile, the outcomes from the series of 2016-17 and 2017-18 are weighted at 50 per cent.

In the other significant changes, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka moved one spot up to the seventh and eighth position, while West Indies went down to ninth. Nepal, much to their fans’ expectations, has moved from 14th position to 11th and Namibia grabbed the 20th position.

Teams like Austria, Botswana, Luxembourg and Mozambique are among the sides figuring in the first men’s T20I ranking table that features all Members meeting the criteria of having played six matches against other ICC members since May 2016.

The move to expand the table follows the ICC’s decision last year

ICC T20I Men's Rankings: India Drops Down to Fifth Position 9

Last year ICC came to a decision that all men’s T20 matches between Members from 1 January 2019 will be classified as internationals. Following this decision, they moved to expand the table of ICC T20I men’s ranking.

For the ICC Women’s T20 team rankings, which were launched in October 2018, the teams will need to have played six matches against other teams in the previous three to four years to remain in the rankings table.

The qualification process for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup is still underway. It will include 58 T20I matches across five regional finals and it is likely to mean significant movements on the rankings over the coming months.

The first final was held in Papua New Guinea last month whilst the Africa final in Uganda (19-24 May). The Europe final was held in Guernsey (15-19 June). Whereas the Asia final took place in Singapore (22-28 July) and the Americas final in the USA (19-25 August) is still to come.

Six of these teams will join hosts- UAE, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Scotland and Zimbabwe in the global qualifier. This will be another chance to improve their standings on the table as they try to qualify for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia.
