The Third Put The Icing On My Three Seasons At Real Madrid – Zidane

Former Real Madrid Zinedine Zidane in a recent interview with UEFA praised Karim Benzema’s attributes, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo’s leadership skills. And what it means to him after becoming the manager to win three Champions League in a row.

Zinedine Zidane resigned after he won the third Champions League in a row with Real Madrid.

Zidane, the man who came at the Santiago Bernabue where Real Madrid were falling apart. Los Blancos were 15 points behind their arch rivals Barcelona in La Liga and were not in any shape to win the Champions League.

After Rafa Benitez was sacked, Zidane was appointed by the Real Madrid president. And everything slowly started to change under the Frenchman.

Real Madrid lost the league that season, but won the Champions League. Just in the next season, Zidane didn’t fail to win the La Liga this time including the Champions League. Despite falling apart in the league in his third season, he guided his side to yet another Champions League win.

Going back to the every memory, Zidane told UEFA:

“The Champions League titles were special for different reasons.T he first one stands out because it was the first for me as a coach, the second one was symbolic and intense, and the third put the icing on my three seasons at Real Madrid. I always stayed true to the football philosophy that I transmitted to my players, regardless of who our opponents were.”

Thoughts on Benzema:

“Karim was important for the balance of the team in terms of how he wanted the team to attack. Helping to implement our possession game by playing with his teammates, he’s a true team player.”

The manager also revealed that he had to do nothing to motivate the players as Ramos and Ronaldo were always up for that job.

“My job was to keep people quiet!”Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo were a big presence in the Real dressing room under Zidane, something that the former coach acknowledged. Both are players with a lot of energy and influence within the squad. Sergio Ramos is a natural leader and a great presence in the dressing room, while Cristiano Ronaldo is a leader on the pitch that inspires his teammates. “They complemented each other well.”

Benzema Can Finish With 30 Or 40 Goals – Julen Loptegui

Real Madrid manager Julen Loptegui believes his striker Karim Benzema has the capability to score 30-40 goals and fight for the Pichichi award for Spain’s top scorer in La Liga.

Karim Benzema scored brace against Leganes on Sunday.

After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, the responsibilities has grown for Benzema and he has lived up to the expectations so far. The player who scored five goals last seasons in 32 league matches has already scored fours goals in the first 3 games of the season.

However, the new manager denies to take any credit for Benzema’s improvement and keeps firm belief on the striker to score more goals.

After Madrid’s 4-1 victory against Leganes, Loptegui said:

“The merit is his. He is a great player, I haven’t changed anybody. Why shouldn’t he finish with 30 or 40 goals? The most important thing is the team and goals are the work of the whole team. Benzema is a great player and always has been. What he’s doing is credit to him. He’s happy and is helping the team, and it’ll stay like this.”

Meanwhile, Golden Glove winner Thibaut Courtois finally made his debut for Real Madrid on Saturday, leaving the UEFA’s best goalkeeper of the year on bench. Courtois was the biggest signing of the Los Blancos in the summer transfer window.

Loptegui on Courtois:

“We decided that Courtois would play. But we have excellent solutions. Keylor is ours, he played a great game against Girona, he is UEFA’s best goalkeeper. We’ll see. The decision will be made on the field although we have an idea of what we will do. We played well, because of the equaliser there was some confusion and we wanted to do things in a hurry but the second half was great.”

With both goal-keepers in top form, Real Madrid are set to face a good problem ahead. However, before media tries to make any headline, Courtois revealed that Navas had taken the decision well.

“Navas wished me a lot of luck. We get one very well, sometimes they look for issues, but we are both competing. For the team, it is going to go well including Kiko Casilla too. We are three great goalkeepers.”

UEFA Champions League 2017/18, Final – Real Madrid vs Liverpool – Match Review

The city of Kyiv, Ukraine hosted the biggest game of the year as far as club football is concerned, with Real Madrid and Liverpool locking horns against each other for the UEFA Champions League Title 2017-2018.

It was also the clash of the Titans, as many viewed it as a face-off between icons, Mohammad Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The stakes were high, as Real Madrid intended to win their third consecutive Champions League title, joining the likes of Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam.

First Half

Starting off, the first twenty minutes of the game shifted from one end to the other, with both the teams struggling for possession and accuracy.

23rd minute – The game saw its first shot on target with Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold having a shy. Navas had to make a save to avoid Arnold a goal.

25th minute – In hindsight, the turning point for Liverpool came when their ace striker, Mohammad Salah collided with the mercurial Sergio Ramos.

Salah took a bad blow to his shoulder and immediately left the pitch, leaving the army of Reds in shock.

29th minute – Salah came back onto the field after tending his shoulder, but could only stay for a minute before weeping his way out of the ground.

34th minute – The game saw yet another casualty, but this time from the Real Madrid’s camp. Carvajal, who went tumbling down from a tackle, suffered a horrible hamstring injury, which did not allow him to take part further in the contest.

Much like Salah, Carvajal too cried his way off the pitch, jeopardizing their chances for the upcoming World Cup in Russia.

42nd minute – The White Sharks had their first opportunity, just at the stroke of half-time, from Ronaldo’s header and then Benzema. The French netted the ball inside the goal, but it was deemed as offside.

Second Half

After an uneventful first half, the real action began in the second, where both sides went on the offence.

48th minute – Lallana, who was substituted for Salah, almost made a meal of a challenge, just in front of the goal, giving Isco an opportunity to strike for Real Madrid.

Fortunately for the Reds, the ball hit the top bar of the goal, devoiding an opportunity for the Spanish to strike for the first time in the match.

50th minute – German international, Kroos, delivered a challenging volley which went straight to Liverpool goalkeeper, Loris Karius.

Benzema intercepted a pass from Karius to his defender, which went straight inside the goal, leaving one and all befuddled with his rookie mistake.

Score: RM 1-0 LIV (Benzema 50′)

54th minute – Before the Whites could get over the celebrations; the Reds delivered a fabulous counterattack through Milner, who provided an opportunity with his dangerous cross.

Madrid’s defender Varane tried to evade the ball with a header before Firmino missed the nets. A corner kick was awarded for Firmino’s effort.

Henderson took a brilliant kick towards Lovren who smacked the ball with a header. Navas made a brilliant save, but the ball ricocheted off him, giving an opportunity to Senegal’s Sadio Mane, who obliged with his equalizers.

In Comes Gareth Bale

Score: RM 1-1 LIV (Mane 54′)

64th minute – Zinedine Zidane’s move to substitute Isco with Gareth Bale in the 61st paid dividends almost instantly, as Bale scored within three minutes of substitution.

Bale scored the best goal in the history of UCL finals with his overhead bicycle kick from a brilliant Marcelo volley, which the goalkeeper had no answer to. Thereby, giving the lead to Madrid.

70th minute – Mane tried to repeat his feat with another counterattack. The Senegalese made a brilliant turning attempt with his left foot, which hit the right post of Navas.

82nd minute – In a match full of tackles and tumbles, the first yellow card registered in the dying moments of the game. Also, Ramos showed all his experience to wait for Mane’s challenge which got the Liverpool striker a yellow card.

84th minute – The final nail in Liverpool’s coffin came from Gareth Bale again who scored from way outside the box, with the swirling strike.

To add to Karius’ horror outing, the ball went through his hands, giving Real Madrid their third goal.

Score: RM 3-1 LIV (Bale 84′)

The final few minutes of the game saw both teams going through the motion. Despite three minutes of additional time, there was no surprise in store.

Real Madrid enter Champions League final

Madrid, May 2:  A brace by Karim Benzema was enough for Real Madrid to hold FC Bayern Munich 2-2 in the second leg of their Champions League semi final and win 4-3 on aggregate.

The Spanish giants were chasing what would be a record third straight triumph in Europe’s elite club competition.

The decisive clash here on Tuesday in front of 80,000-plus at the Santiago Bernabeu between the two giants of European football delivered plenty in the way of excitement, Efe news reported.

Leading 2-1 after the first leg in Munich, the hosts conceded in the third minute, when a poor clearance by Sergio Ramos led to Joshua Kimmich’s second goal of the tie.

Seven minutes later, it was the turn of Bayern defender David Alaba to err at his team’s expense.

The Austrian left Benzema free to redirect Marcelo’s cross to make it 1-1 on the night and 3-2 overall in Real Madrid’s favour.

Suddenly looking less dangerous, the visitors concentrated on defending and forced the Blancos to rely on long balls to get deep and chances were scarce for both sides.

With Cristiano Ronaldo unmarked, Marcelo instead passed to Toni Kroos, while both Thomas Maller and James Rodriguez wasted opportunities for Bayern.

The closing seconds of the first half saw the referee decline to award a penalty for a clear hand ball by Marcelo on an effort by Kimmich.

Benzema struck again for Real Madrid in the first minute of the second half, taking advantage of a colossal blunder by Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich to send the ball rolling into the empty net to consolidate the advantage for the hosts.

But anyone who expected Bayern to roll over and die was quickly disillusioned as the German side laid siege to Blancos’ goal.

Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas delayed the inevitable as long as he could, making a fine stop against Alaba and diving to thwart Mats Hummels before finally giving up a goal to former Blanco James, who scored in the 62nd minute.

The final 28 minutes were torment for the Blancos and their fans as Bayern flew forward to get the equalizer, but the home side survived the onslaught and were headed to Kiev with thoughts of making history yet again.

Benzema Says Role Of A Modern Forward Is More Than Scoring Goals

Madrid, Sep 22 (IANS) Real Madrid’s French forward Karim Benzema has shrugged off criticism about his lack of goals this football season and said the role of a modern forward is more than just scoring.

Some Real Madrid fans want to see more from the Frenchman, who has a current tally of around 181 goals in 371 matches, reports Efe.

“Lack of goals? It depends on how you see soccer. For me, a modern forward is not just about scoring goals. He should participate in the game, open spaces for others and assist,” he said on Thursday at a press conference after extending his contract with La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid until 2021.

“Of course I want to net more goals, it is important for the team, but there are also other things to do. I think about the team. I work hard in front of the goal to score more, but a modern forward must do other things related to passes, movement and spaces,” he continued.

He said that criticism is part of his life. “There is criticism and that takes you to the highest level. I am here, I know how it is. In this club, there is a lot of criticism and it is fine. It is part of my life. I am here to work and that is it. When people criticize, they are expecting more from me,” he added.

Benzema, who joined Real Madrid in 2009, said that his first season with the Spanish side was the worst as he was forced to adapt to his new life both on and off the pitch.

He said he had faith in Real Madrid’s ability to recover from what some deem a lacklustre start to this season, characterised by the team’s 0-1 defeat against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on Wednesday evening.

“The beginning has not been good. It happens to all big teams, I have faith in my team, we are fine and we are working together. It is just the beginning. We are trailing (Barcelona) by seven points but we are united. Last year we won a lot of titles and we are Real Madrid. We will fix it in the next game,” he said.

Real Madrid’s Benzema Extends Contract Until 2021

Madrid, Sep 20 (IANS) Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has extended his contract to stay with La Liga’s defending champions until 2021, the Spanish club announced on Wednesday.

Real Madrid confirmed the extension of the France forward in a statement released on its official website, reports Efe news agency.

“Real Madrid C.F. and Karim Benzema have agreed an extension to the player’s contract, binding him to the club until June 30, 2021,” the Spanish club said.

Real Madrid added that the 29-year-old Frenchman is to speak to media in the Santiago Bernabeu’s press room on Thursday.

Benzema joined Real Madrid from Lyon in 2009 for some 35 million euros (about $42 million).

Throughout his career at Real Madrid, he has scored more than 180 goals and almost claimed all trophies with the Spanish club, including the titles of La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Real In Their Best Period Ever: Benzema

Madrid, Sep 14 (IANS) Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema on Thursday said he does not want to leave the football club, adding the UEFA Champions League defending champions are in “one of their best periods ever.”

“As a forward, when you’re at a club and you’re a first-team regular, you don’t need to look elsewhere — especially when you’re at a club like Real Madrid.

“It’s very hard because you know this club, the expectations. You start each season from scratch and you have to work, and above all stay at the top,” Benzema told a website IN SPORTS.

The Frenchman is into the final 12 months of the five-year contract extension.

Alongwith Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronald, Benzema is part of Madrid’s “BBC” which has been a cornerstone of their success.

“There are perhaps six or seven players who have been playing together for six or seven years,” Benzema, 29, said.

“I think we’re in one of Real Madrid’s best periods ever, it’s as simple as that. The team is really very strong.”

Benzema expressed his shock at Brazilian Neymar opting to leave FC Barcelona and join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a world-record move.

“I’m not going to say I’m shocked because he does what he wants,” he said. “I thought it was bizarre, but he undoubtedly has his reasons.”

Bale & Benzema Under Spotlight As Real Madrid Take On Levante

Madrid, Sep 8 (IANS) Real Madrid go back into action in the La Liga football championship on Saturday when they entertain recently promoted Levante.

Real Madrid go into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw at home versus Valencia following a game in which they created but missed several chances to have taken all three points, reports Xinhua news agency.

Those chances which were mainly missed by strikers Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale have placed the pair under the spotlight with Bale booed by a section of the fans in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

A fortnight away on successful international duty with Wales could have done much to have given Bale a much-needed confidence boost and he is almost certain to be included in Zinedine Zidane’s starting 11, but he knows that the fans are unlikely to forgive any errors.

With Cristiano Ronaldo still suspended following his ending off in the Spanish Supercup, Benzema is also likely to start alongside Marco Asensio, while captain Sergio Ramos is back in defense after missing the Valencia game through suspension.

Real Madrid are back in European action in midweek as they start their campaign for a third Champions League title in three seasons and it will be interesting to see if Zidane rotates his squad for the Levante match.

Summer arrivals Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos have still to taste league action this season and could get their chance, if not in the starting 11, then at least from the bench and it is a fact that with such a wealth of talent in his squad, Zidane’s most difficult task this campaign could be keeping all of his players happy.

Levante meanwhile are unbeaten on their return to the top-flight after a season in the second division and have looked to be a solid and spirited side as shown by their fightback from 0-2 down to claim a 2-2 draw at home against Deportivo la Coruna a fortnight ago.

They will be without Jose Luis Morales, who was sent off in that game and his trickery on the wing will be missed. But after seeing how their neighbours Valencia claimed a point in the last game in the Bernabeu, they will hope they too can frustrate the champions and increase the pressure on Bale and Benzema.

French Court Removes Judicial Control Imposed On Benzema

Paris, July 26 (IANS) A French court has lifted the judicial control that had been imposed on star footballer Karim Benzema for his alleged involvement in a sex tape blackmail case, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Sylvain Cormier told Efe that his client was very satisfied with the decision because this means that Benzema can return to a normal life, adding that they are waiting for his innocence to be recognised.

The judicial control was ordered against Benzema in November 2015, after the Real Madrid player was charged with complicity in attempted blackmail with a sex tape of his France teammate, Mathieu Valbuena.

That order included banning Benzema from contacting his childhood friend Karim Zenati, who is also charged in the same case.

In March 2016, the court of appeal of Versailles partially lifted that measure and decided that Benzema could again have contact with Valbuena, but kept the veto on meeting the other defendants.

However, the current decision, according to French media, overrides all limitations.

The case was handled by the court of Versailles, but the Supreme Court redirected it on July 11 to the court of Paris, which will have to re-examine it.
