IPL 2020: Didn’t Adapt To Bigger Ground Dimensions, Conditions In Dubai – Steve Smith

Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Steve Smith has stated that the team could not adapt to the bigger ground dimensions of the Dubai International stadium. RR had won both their opening matches of the IPL 2020 playing both the matches at Sharjah cricket stadium which is comparatively smaller to the Dubai International stadium.

Rajasthan Royals had the won the toss and chosen to field. KKR went on to score 174 from 20 overs with important knocks from Shubman Gill (47 runs) and Eoin Morgan (34 runs). The Royals could not bear the wrath of KKR bowlers and could only get 137 runs on the board in 20 overs. KKR won the match by 37 runs.

That happens in T20 cricket sometimes, we have a few areas to improve on and keep moving forward: Steve Smith on loss to KKR

The RR skipper stated that their plan didn’t go right and that is normal to happen in T20 sometimes. He also mentioned they need to improve considering certain areas in their team. Smith said that the ground felt a lot different to Sharjah and they couldn’t adapt to the dimensions and the pitch.

“Didn’t quite go to plan. That happens in T20 cricket sometimes, we have a few areas to improve on, and keep moving forward. You could go one way or another (with the toss). KKR like to chase, so we planned to put their death bowling under pressure but obviously couldn’t do that as we lost too many wickets upfront,” Smith said in the post match conference.

“Few of us still thought we were playing in Sharjah. It did (feel a lot different), the far side is a very big side and we didn’t see too many balls going there and the other side is slightly shorter.

We probably didn’t adapt to the dimensions and the wicket, also dropped a few catches which cost us. It is about forming whatever XI is best for the conditions we are facing; we will wait and see. Disappointing tonight but we need to keep moving forward.” he added.

Steve Smith opened up on his banter with Pat Cummins:

Australian teammates Smith and Cummins were on the opposite sides last night, and Cumming got the better of Smith, sending the in-form batsman back to pavilion for just three runs. After the wicket, they both shared a quick amusing chat.

“It wasn’t a great battle (with Cummins), he won easily… Spoke to him now and he said you smack those in the nets, sometimes you just get a good one,” Steve Smith said.

IPL 2020: Grateful To KKR Management For Backing Us When We Were Injured – Shivam Mavi

Man of the moment and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Shivam Mavi extended his gratitude to the KKR management for backing him in his long injury spells. Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti had an incredible Wednesday night in Dubai — taking two wickets each at an amazing economy rate. The pace duo had starred in India’s Under-19 World Cup Campaign in 2018 and were both signed by KKR in the same year.

However, Mavi could only play nine matches in IPL 2018 and was out of IPL 2019 due to stress fracture to his back.  Nagarkoti suffered a back injury which kept him out for two seasons. The KKR management stuck with both of their young guns — and now they seem to be paying back with their match-winning performance.

He also thanked the KKR management for keeping faith in him and his pace partner Kamlesh  Nagarkoti when they were injured for long spells.

“It felt really good to dismiss both Samson and Buttler. I bowled the ball as I had planned to do. It feels really nice to spend time with the likes of Russell and Cummins. We have mixed up with them, they are always around with us,” Mavi told Dinesh Karthik and Nagarkoti in a video posted on iplt20.com.

“It feels really good when Venky Mysore sir and Shah Rukh Khan sir come to watch us play. We were injured but the management showed faith in us and we are grateful for that.”

“For them to come out here, and express themselves and wanting to do something with both the bat and the ball is really special,” Dinesh Karthik said in a post match interview.

IPL 2020: Shubman Gill Could Be Leading An IPL Side In Two Years – Simon Doull

Former New Zealand cricketer Siman Doull has lauded Shubman Gill for his match-winning knock against SRH — and has predicted that Gill could soon be a captain in IPL.  On Saturday evening, SRH won the toss and opted to bat first against KKR at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. SRH had a slow start to the game and they lost their openers quickly. The Hyderabad based side could only add up a meagre score of 142 runs.

A stellar and steady knock of 70 runs from 62 balls by Shubman Gill and an important partnership by Eoin Morgan who made 42 runs off 29 balls, cruised KKR easily past the target. KKR now have one win and one loss to their name in the IPL 2020.

Simon Doull  impressed by Shubman Gill’s knock against SRH

Cricketer-turned-commentator Doull said Gill’s 70 against SRH was a perfect score for him to get started in the tournament. He also pointed out the presence of Eoin Morgan on the other end was a perfect combination for them to achieve the target.

“It was a perfect score for Shubman to get into this tournament. He didn’t score much in the first match. He needed a score to get started and when you are chasing only 143, you could play your natural game. It will hold him in good stead moving forward. In the match against SRH, he timed the innings superbly. He needed to be there and show the maturity that he can bat through and win for his team,” Doull told Cricbuzz.

“I think Eoin Morgan had the best ally on the other end in Shubman. So, the experience and calm nature of Morgan was supported well by the youthful exuberance of Shubman. He kept his head in place and I think it was a very very fine innings.” he added.

Shubman Gill could be leading an IPL side in two years: Simon Doull

Doull feels the company of Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum will have a good impact on Gill and he will get to learn a lot around them. He opined that he won’t be surprised to see 21-year-old Gill captaining an IPL side in the next two years.

“I won’t be surprised if we see him leading an IPL side two years down the line at the ripe age of 22-23. I think he should spend a lot of time with Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan and pick their brains. He also has Brendon McCullum, one of the most innovative captains in the last 7-9 years. I think he can learn a lot if he is around these guys,” Doull observed.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ Predicted lineup against Rajasthan Royals:

The Kolkata Knight Riders have found their winning combination of the team which won against SRH. Sandeep Warrier and Nikhil Naik were replaced with Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Varun Chakravarthy in their second match.

Openers: Sunil Narine and Shubhman Gill

West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine hasn’t displayed his explosive batting yet but will be given more chances by KKR to bat up the order and give them a good start. Shubman Gill stayed calm and played for the whole match against SRH scoring 70 runs off 62 balls including five fours and two sixes. He was the man of the match and his calm and composure won KKR the match.

Middle Order: Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell

Nitish Rana will come at the one down spot again for Kolkata Knight Riders. He hasn’t been able to stay long at the pitch yet, making a quick 24 and 26 in the two matches. Skipper Dinesh Karthik will be playing at the two down spot and will look to compensate with the bat for a duck in the last match.

Eoin Morgan was in quite a form in the last match, he partnered with Gill to score 42 off 29 balls helping KKR to the target. KKR’s hard hitter Russell will be starting at his usual position. The Russell storm is yet to be seen in this campaign, hopefully against RR bowlers KKR would want Russell to back to his usual self.

Bowlers: Pat Cummins, Shivam Mavi, Kuldeep Yadav, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Varun Chakravarthy

The bowling attack of KKR showed how lethal they can be against SRH, where they stopped them for only 142 runs in 20 overs. Pacer Pat Cummins, after a horror show against MI, was economical in the second match and ended with an impressive figure of 19/1.

The inclusion of Nagaroti and Chravarthy meant Kolkata Knight Riders had seven bowling options to go with and they used all of them. , Sunil Narine, Shivam Mavi, Kuldeep Yadav, and Andre Russell were all impressive. Varun Chakravarthy also picked up his maiden IPL wicket. The bowling lineup is most likely to remain the same for KKR in their next match against RR.
