Aakash Chopra Urges Rajasthan Royals To Not Spend Unnecessary Amount On Inexperienced Players In IPL 2022 Auction

Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer has advised the Rajasthan Royals not to spend a lot of money on inexperienced players in the upcoming auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022).

The cricketer-turned-commentator made these remarks while speaking on his YouTube channel. Rajasthan Royals had a pretty bad outing in the 2020 edition of IPL. With six wins and eight losses, they finished the season at the bottom in the points table. They fared slightly better in IPL 2021 with a 7th place finish with 10 points.

Aakash Chopra: Rajasthan Royals Have Erred In Spending Money On Inexperienced Cricketers In IPL

Aakash Chopra emphasized how the franchise has often spent huge sums of money in the past to rope in unproven campaigners. He believes that they should change their strategy this time around.

Aakash Chopra said: “Rajasthan Royals have erred in spending money on inexperienced players in the past. They also have a tendency to pick a lot of England players in their side. If they are going to spend as much money as the other franchises, then they must go after big names.”

The Rajasthan Royals have retained three players ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. Sanju Samson (INR 14 crores), Jos Buttler (INR 10 crores) and Yashavi Jaiswal (INR 4 crores) were announced as their three picks for the forthcoming season of the cash-rich league. One of the biggest surprises, somewhat shocks, of the entire IPL 2022 Retention process was the exclusion of pacer Jofra Archer and all-rounder Ben Stokes from the list of players retained.

Aakash Chopra: Rajasthan Royals’ Retentions Were Spot On

Aakash Chopra added that the Rajasthan-based franchise has done a fine job with their retentions. This is why he feels that they do not need to target players like Shreyas Iyer or Ishan Kishan in the auction.

Aakash Chopra said: “Their retentions are spot on. This will be one franchise that will not go after Shreyas Iyer or Ishan Kishan because there is no need for those players in their side.”

The Rajasthan Royals are left with a purse of INR 62 crores. The IPL 2022 auction is set to be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. A total of 590 cricketers are set to go under the hammer in the two-day event.

The likes of Steve Smith, Ankit Rajpoot, Oshane Thomas, Varun Aaron, Tom Curran, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Riyan Parag, Shreyas Gopal, Rahul Tewatia, Andrew Tye, Jaydev Unadkat, David Miller and Robin Uthappa were released by Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2021 and IPL 2022.

The Chennai Braves lost their previous encounter to the Northern Warriors by 19 runs. Batting first, the Warriors piled up a mammoth total of 152/4 in their allotted 10 overs, with openers Kennar Lewis and Moeen Ali putting on a blistering partnership of 106 runs.

Before The Resumption Of IPL 2021 In UAE, Not Many Thought KKR Would End Up In Top 4: Deep Dasgupta

Deep Dasgupta lauded the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) stunning efforts to qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2021. However, he acknowledged that no one would have counted on the Kolkata-based franchise to finish in the top four before the resumption of the IPL in the UAE.

When the 14th edition of the tournament was halted in May due to the COVID-19 outbreak in India and bio bubble breaches, KKR was placed second from the bottom of the table and had won just two matches out of their first seven. However, Brendon McCullum’s side manifested a fearless approach in the second leg.

Deep Dasgupta: Before The Resumption Of IPL 2021 In UAE, Not Many Thought KKR Would End Up In Top 4

While reviewing every franchise’s performance during the league stage, Deep Dasgupta praised the Eoin Morgan-led side. After KKR’s impressive display during the second leg, he said that they now have the much-needed confidence and momentum in their side. However, deep Dasgupta also opined that the biggest issue for the two-time champions is the unavailability of Andre Russell in the last few games, as it remains to be seen if he is available for the playoffs.

“They (KKR) are pretty much in form the way they’re playing right now. The biggest issue is the unavailability of Andre Russell. It remains to be seen whether he will be available for the knockouts. But it looks like they’re a solid team, have momentum on their side and have instilled confidence. Before the resumption of the second half of the IPL, not many would have thought they would end up in the top 4. And the fact that they have qualified, tells you that they are in very good form.”

Brendon McCullum’s troops will look to lift their third IPL trophy this season. They will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator at the Sharjah Cricket Ground on October 11.

Deep Dasgupta: Rajasthan Royals Missed Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, And Jos Buttler

Meanwhile, the Men in Pink Rajasthan Royals took their inconsistent form from India to the UAE. Before the resumption of the competition, the Rajasthan Royals were in the fifth position after playing seven matches and winning only three games.

Deep Dasgupta opined that RR hand-picked their overseas contingent as the nucleus of the side, which eventually paved their downfall. The side’s star players, like Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes, were unavailable for the UAE leg of the competition. Moreover, the new signings – West Indian duo of Evin Lewis and Oshane Thomas, New Zealand cricketer Glenn Phillips, and South Africa’s left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi didn’t help the cause of Rajasthan to progress into playoffs.

Jofra Archer missed out from playing in IPL 2021 due to injury, while Jos Buttler, who was recently blessed with a child, opted out of IPL 2021 UAE leg, and Ben Stokes prioritized his mental wellbeing and decided to not play in India’s Test tour and IPL 2021 besides T20I World Cup 2021.

“They finished seventh in the table and you have to feel bad for them. They missed out on their big names. Rajasthan’s philosophy has always been to find success around their overseas players like Archer, Buttler, Stokes. Unfortunately, Jofra was not available for the franchise during the first leg, who was one of their best players last season. Unfortunately again in the second half, there was no Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes available as well.”

Deep Dasgupta also stated that the consistent form of their skipper, Sanju Samson, was the biggest positive for the side. The 26-year-old amassed 484 runs at an incredible average of 40 runs per match in 14 encounters for his side. He was also the first player to score a hundred this season. Deep Dasgupta praised the wicket-keeper batsman.

“But the biggest positive for them was their captain Sanju’s consistent performance. Down the years the main issue with him was his inconsistency but this season, we’ve seen his maturity. His consistency is good news for Indian cricket as well. The only thing is that they were let down massively from their overseas contingent due to the unavailability.”

Considering their performances this season, Rajasthan Royals will look to revamp their entire squad for the cash-rich league in 2022.

IPL 2021: Complete List Of Players Who Have Come In As Replacements For The UAE Leg

IPL 2021, the much-awaited second phase of the cash-rich league is all set to resume from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on three-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

However, ahead of the resumption of the fourteenth season, many players have withdrawn from IPL 2021 citing various reasons. While some have opted to stay out for fitness concerns and personal reasons, others focused on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021, which will start right after the lucrative league. Due to this, IPL franchises have also announced replacements for those players who will not be available for the remainder of IPL 2021.

Overall, he has played 49 T20 games, factoring in his appearances in the BBL and PSL with a tally of 1171 runs at a strike rate of 155 plus.

RCB will be without their allrounder Washington Sundar for the UAE leg of IPL 2021 after he failed to fully recover from a finger injury. Washington Sundar had sustained the injury in the UK last month which ruled him out of the ongoing Test series between India and England as well. Washington Sundar hurt his finger during a warm-up match in the lead-up of the five-match series.

Punjab Kings have signed Adil Rashid as a replacement player for the UAE leg of IPL 2021. The 33-year-old England leg-spinner, the joint-highest wicket-taker at The Hundred, replaces Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson, who along with compatriot Riley Meredith, has withdrawn from the second half of the tournament.

Adil Rashid, who hasn’t played in the IPL before, is currently ranked fourth in ICC’s list of T20I bowlers and has taken 232 wickets from 201 T20 matches at an economy of 7.43. He will also be one of three leg-spinning options for KL Rahul alongside the Indian pair of Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin.

Adil Rashid is ranked fourth in the ICC table for T20I bowlers, behind South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi, who recently signed with the Rajasthan Royals, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, now a Royal Challengers Bangalore replacement player, and Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan stalwart who has been a star for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Punjab Kings suffered a big blow just eight days ahead of the second phase of IPL 2021 as their star player Dawid Malan pulled out of the tournament. No sooner the England player made himself unavailable for the second leg, the red brigade roped in South African batsman Aiden Markram in their side.

PBKS recent recruit Aiden Markram of South Africa is equally a competent batsman who would be playing his inaugural edition in the second phase of IPL 2021. The 26-year old has a fine T20 record. He has played 53 innings, amassed 1424 runs, and returned with an average of 30.95. He has played 26 Tests, 34 ODIs, and 15 T20Is and averages above 35 in Tests and T20Is.

Dawid Malan, who played his inaugural edition of IPL this season was bought by the PKBS for INR 1.5 crores during the IPL 2021 auction. In the first leg, however, the explosive batsman played just one match for the team where he scored 26 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed Tim Southee for the remaining 31 games of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pacer Tim Southee, understandably, comes in place of Australian pace all-rounder Pat Cummins who has pulled out of the IPL 2021 second leg, citing personal reasons.

Having featured in the IPL for six consecutive years, Tim Southee went unsold in the 2020 auction. His most recent appearance came in the 2019 edition when he turned up for RCB, finishing with an economy rate of 13 in the three games he played. The 32-year-old right-arm pacer had previously played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In 40 IPL games, he has picked 28 wickets at an economy rate of 8.47. Pat Cummins picked 12 wickets in 14 games that included a 4-wicket haul in the 2020 IPL season. He bowled well in IPL 2021 picking 9 scalps in 7 games averaging 26.33 besides scoring 93 runs averaging 31.

Notably, SRH has had a disastrous campaign so far winning only one of the seven games in the first phase of IPL 2021 and are currently placed at the bottom of the table.

Kieron Pollard Reckons Shimron Hetmyer Can Take West Indies Cricket Forward

Kieron Pollard, West Indies limited-overs skipper wants to see star batsman Shimron Hetmyer dominate across all formats in international cricket. However, Kieron Pollard feels the southpaw has to work harder to gain the confidence of the selectors.

Shimron Hetmyer has not consistently featured in the last year due to injury concerns and he even opted out of the Bangladesh tour earlier this year. Since making his debut in 2017, the 24-year-old has played only 16 Tests, 45 ODIs, and 27 T20Is for the West Indies.

Kieron Pollard: Shimron Hetmyer Can Take West Indies Cricket Forward And Should Be Playing All 3 Formats

During an interaction on the Line & Length TV Show on Sportsmax, Kieron Pollard stated that Shimron Hetmyer is the player who will take West Indies cricket forward.

“We love Hetty. He is a young, talented cricketer. He is a guy who we know, deep in our hearts, can take West Indies cricket forward from a generational point of view with his skill and what he can achieve on a cricket field,” said Kieron Pollard.

“He knows the truth and he knows what it is. We would love Hetty to be playing all three formats, but as the saying goes, ‘You can only take the horse to the water, but you can’t force him to drink.’ With that being said, I will leave it right there and for the individual to get things together,” said Kieron Pollard.

Speaking about Shimron Hetmyer’s performances across the different formats of the game, Kieron Pollard said: “He has a fantastic record in ODI cricket. We saw what he can do in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and it’s just for him to take what’s in front of him. The world is at his feet.”

Over the last year, Shimron Hetmyer has managed only 100 runs from five innings in T20Is and 14 runs in two ODIs. The southpaw last played a Test match in November 2019. He could not make it into the West Indies squad for the recent home series against Sri Lanka after failing to clear the mandatory fitness test.

He last featured in an ODI match in January 2020. Shimron Hetmyer scored 84 runs in 6 matches for Delhi Capitals (DC) in now-postponed IPL 2021.

Kieron Pollard: West Indies Have To Plan Properly In Order To Conquer South Africa

Kieron Pollard warned that the West Indies will have to be at their best to beat a very talented South African side. The Men in Maroon play South Africa in a five-match T20I series starting June 26.

“We have to plan properly in order to conquer. I’m not looking too much into the names (of the opposition) because as I said before these guys are talented in their own right as they would have not been selected for their national teams (otherwise),” said Kieron Pollard.

Sheldon Cottrell, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Oshane Thomas, and Hayden Walsh Jr. return alongside the majority of the squad who featured in the 2-1 T20I Series victory against Sri Lanka in March. Kieron Pollard, who led the team to the ODI and T20I series win against Sri Lanka, will continue to captain the team. Nicholas Pooran will play the role of Kieron Pollard’s deputy. It has been learned that Suni Narine is still not ready to return to international cricket.

Gautam Gambhir has criticized Steven Smith’s inconsistent run with the bat and Rajasthan Royal’s inability to win matches. Rajasthan Royals have won only 5 and lost 7 matches and are placed 6th in the points table. Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes that Steven Smith is the main issue that is not working out for Rajasthan Royals this season.

Former Australian captain Steve Smith is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world across formats. Still, his performance in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League 2020 has not been as expected despite getting off to a fine start in the tournament scoring back-to-back fifties for the team. He scored the fifties against KXIP, CSK and RCB but failed in most of the other matches mostly scoring single-digit scores.

Steven Smith Main Issue For Rajasthan Royals – Gautam Gambhir

Steven Smith has an average of more than 40 both in Tests, and ODIs. He also averages 35.35 in IPL with 11 half-centuries and 1 century but have notched only three half-centuries so far in 12 matches. Rajasthan Royals are not able to win matches as they have lost 7, has exposed chinks in his performance both as captain and batsman.

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes that Steven Smith is the main issue that is not working out for Rajasthan Royals this season.

“I think Steve Smith is the main issue for Rajasthan Royals, let’s be honest. I have been saying it from Day 1,” Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo.

Steven Smith has scored only 276 runs in 12 matches despite the fifties in the first two matches against CSK and KXIP both of which Rajasthan Royals won.

Steven Smith’s Place Should Be Taken By Oshane Thomas – Gautam Gambhir

According to Gautam Gambhir, if Rajasthan Royals would drop Steven Smith, it would allow them to pick an overseas pacer like Oshane Thomas, which would help Jofra Archer in the bowling attack.

“Steve Smith drops himself and RR can pick themselves Oshane Thomas or any other overseas seamer in his place alongside Jofra Archer. His performance will go up.

“Whoever is the captain can use Archer in a better way. I remember the game against Delhi Capitals – they were 10/2. And they had only used 2 overs from Jofra Archer,” he added.

“If they had one more overseas pacer, they could have bowled 3 overs from Archer in the first six – and try and actually seal the game then and there. Just because you know there is not enough depth and quality apart from Jofra Archer, so you have to only use 2 overs from Archer,” Gambhir added.

Steven Smith again failed to fire on Sunday as he scored just 11 runs. But Rajasthan Royals still managed to beat Mumbai Indians by eight wickets due to a match-winning hundred from Ben Stokes and a fifty from Sanju Samson.
