Arsenal Not Competing With Tottenham: Cech

London, Nov 15 (IANS) Arsenal FC star goalkeeper Peter Cech on Wednesday asserted that his club was focused on the English Premier League (EPL) title and has no competition with Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal will take on Tottenham in the EPL tie on Saturday.

“There is always one odd year where things can change, but the most important thing for us is competing against the other teams for the Premier League title and for the glory,” the ex-Czech Republic national was quoted saying by Fox Sports.

“We are not competing against Tottenham Hotspur. Two years ago when we finished above them we were disappointed because we didn’t win the title.

“Our target is to win the title and be successful during the season, not necessarily looking at what Tottenham are doing,” Cech added.

The 35-year-old also said for Arsenal winning trophies at the end of the season has always been a priority.

“Success is ultimately winning trophies. We were under pressure the last couple of years, people talking about winning trophies, obviously we are disappointed not to have won the title but we won FA Cups,” the Arsenal goalkeeper said.

“Although the season was not always what we wanted, we always had a trophy at the end of it,” Cech added.

The two English sides on Wednesday joined Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in punching their tickets for the knockout stage, reports Efe.

The victory at London’s Wembley Stadium boosted unbeaten Spurs to 10 points and the top spot in Group H, three ahead of two-time defending champions Real Madrid.

Dele Alli had a double for the hosts, while Tottenham superstar Harry Kane — rumoured to be at the top of Real Madrid’s shopping list — assisted on the Christian Eriksen goal in the 65th minute that made it 3-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo pulled one back for the visitors in the 80th minute, his sixth goal of the current Champions League campaign and 111th overall in the competition.

Borussia Dortmund and APOEL drew 1-1 in the other Group H contest. With just 2 points apiece, they are all but mathematically eliminated from contention.

Man City remained perfect, conceding an early goal to hosts Napoli before coming back to win 4-2, climbing to 12 points and tightening their grip on first place in Group F.

The crucial third goal was the work of Argentine striker Sergio “Kun” Agüero, who become City’s all-time leading scorer.

With two matches left in the group stage, Napoli have just 3 points, 6 behind Shakhtar Donetsk, 3-1 winners Wednesday over Feyenoord, who have yet to earn a point.

In Group E, Sevilla revenged their earlier 1-5 away loss to Spartak Moscow, defeating the Russian club 2-1 in Spain to improve to 7 points.

Liverpool vanquished Maribor 3-0 to top the group with 8 points, while Spartak’s 5 points are enough to keep them in the hunt.

Monaco, one of last season’s semi-finalists, remained winless, playing to a 1-1 draw with Group G leaders Besiktas in Istanbul.

The Turkish squad have 10 points, followed by Porto, who improved to 6 points with a 3-1 win against RB Leipzig, sitting in third place with 4 points, 2 better than Monaco.

Tottenham Hold Real Madrid To 1-1 Draw

Madrid, Oct 18 (IANS) Real Madrid’s recent problems in front of the goal were once again evident when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Tottenham Hotspurs.

Madrid, on Tuesday, were unable to score from open play and needed a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty to give them a share of the points in a game in which both goalkeepers made important saves, reports Xinhua news agency.

The result leaves both sides on seven points and in a solid position in their group after Borussia Dortmund were only able to draw away to APOEL Nicosia.

The game got off to an entertaining start as Real Madrid, with Tony Kroos and Luka Modric in midfield, looked to take the game to the English side.

Ronaldo headed against the post in just five minutes and Karim Benzema should have scored from the rebound, but put the ball wide.

Tottenham had a good appeal for a penalty turned down after 22 minutes when Casemiro appeared to hook his foot around the ankle of visiting striker, Fernando Llorente following a corner.

But the visitors took the lead in a slightly fortunate fashion in the 27th minute when Serge Aurier’s cross was deflected into his own net by Madrid defender Rafael Varene, who was under pressure from Harry Kane.

Isco and Marcelo both went close for Madrid before Aurier undid his good work in Tottenham’ s goal with a needless foul on Tony Kroos which allowed Ronaldo to level the scores from the penalty spot three minutes before the break.

The second half saw Madrid give everything as they chased the win and Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris was the hero in the 55th minute with a fine save to deny Benzema’s header.

He then pulled off two more saves to deny Ronaldo as Madrid pinned their rivals back, but 18 minutes from time Keylor Navas also pulled off a magnificent save to deny Kane before denying Christian Eriksen.

In the other matches, Manchester City beat Napoli 2-0 after the first 15 minutes on goals by Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus. and Liverpool claimed the top spot in Group E with a 7-0 thrashing of Maribor.

Modric To Face Past When Real Play Tottenham

Madrid, Oct 16 (IANS) Two Real Madrid football players will come face to face with their past when Real Madrid take on Tottenham Hotspurs in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday.

Although the club’s record signing Gareth Bale will have to watch the game from the stands as he recovers from the calf injury he suffered against Borussia Dortmund in Madrid’s last Champions League game, Modric will almost certainly be in Zinedine Zidane’s starting 11, reports Xinhua news agency.

Speaking in the Spanish press at the weekend, Modric praised Zidane’s work after the coach’s 100th game in charge.

“He has brought us calm and stability; he is special,” said Modric of the Real Madrid coach.

The Croatian was rested as a precaution in Saturday’s win in Getafe after being on international duty and will take his place alongside Tony Kroos and Casemiro in the side. Casemiro was also rested at the weekend and will replace Marcos Llorente.

Real Madrid have had a positive start to the defence of their title with a comfortable victory at home to APOEL Nicosia and a 3-1 triumph away to Borussia Dortmund and a win over Tottenham would give them nine points from their opening three group matches and all but assure their place in the knockout stage of the tournament.

Tottenham have also had a flying start in Europe with a win over Borussia at Wembley and a triumph in Nicosia thanks to a hat-trick from striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has been in brilliant form this season with six goals in the Premier League and five in Europe and is clearly the man Madrid central defenders Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varene will have to watch.

Kane’s fellow England international Dele Ali will miss the trip to Madrid through suspension, while Danny Rose, Dembele and Wanyama are injured to limit coach Mauricio Pochettino’s options to rotate his squad.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will be without Mateo Kovacic and Dani Ceballos due to physical issues and Zidane will have to decide whether to give a vote of confidence to young right back Achraf or to play the more experienced Nacho Fernandez on the right of defence.

We Will Win Against Real Madrid, Says Harry Kane

Nicosia (Cyprus), Sep 28 (IANS) Confident after scoring a hat-trick against Apoel FC here in the Champions League tie, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane asserted that his club will be travelling to play against Real Madrid with the intention of defeating them.

The London club striker scored a hat-trick to help his club win 3-0 in the Champions League away fixture on Tuesday.

Tottenham will travel to Madrid to take on the Champions League reigning champions on October 18.

“We feel we can beat anyone on our day, of course, we know it will be tough but it’s two good teams and an open game, probably. It will come down to who is more clinical — hopefully, that can be us. We are going there to win, not just to get a result. We will see what happens,” Kane was quoted saying by The Guardian on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old who won the Golden Boot in English Premier League (EPL) last season also revealed he is a big fan of football star Cristiano Ronaldo and said the Real Madrid player is one of the best player of the generation.

“I’ve never met Ronaldo but I’m a fan, of course, I’m a fan of great footballers and he is one of the best — especially of my generation. We probably won’t be up against each other much in the game but it’s always great to play the best in the world,” the English international said.

“They have one of the best defences with (Sergio) Ramos, Marcelo, players like that. I want to test myself against the best and they have been the best in the last few years, without a doubt. It’s going to be exciting. I want to put in a performance like I have been recently,” Kane added.

Kane, who is the current holder of the EPL Golden Boot has won it for two consecutive time. He also won the Tottenham Hotspur player of the year in 2014-15.

Tottenham Played Like Adults, Says Alderweireld

London, Sep 14 (IANS) English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld on Thursday hailed his side’s performance against Borussia Dortmund saying they ‘played like adults’ in their opening fixture of the Champions League at the Wembley here.

“We didn’t play like children, we played like adults,” the Belgian was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

The London club defeated the Bundesliga side 3-1 here on Wednesday night. Opening goal from Son Heung-Mi followed by a brace from coach Mauricio Pochettino’s star striker Harry Kane helped Tottenham Hotspur seal a comfortable victory.

The lone strike for the away side was scored by Ukrainian forward Andriy Yarmolenko.

Alderweireld confessed the club felt the pressure in the beginning and said they fought hard and improvised on themselves to clinch victory.

“It was not going our way but we fought, we kept compact and we tried to be dangerous when we came out. We did that in the first half and the second half was better. We have learned quick and we have to learn quick. It’s a good step from last season and a good start.

“When it doesn’t go our way because we want to press and sometimes we are a little bit late, we (have to) just stay compact to get through it. And when we got the ball, we tried to be dangerous. That’s a big plus from last season. They had a lot of possession but we defended very well. We did not give a lot of chances away. In the second half, Dortmund got more tired and we should have scored more.”

The 28-year-old has made 71 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur since 2015.

Guardiola Praises Man City After Tottenham Win

Nashville (US), July 30 (IANS) Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola reckoned the win over fellow English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season fixture here was the best under his watch and exactly what his club lacked last season.

“We haven’t dominated like today, last season we were good, but not in 90 minutes like that,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by the Guardian after Manchester City thumped the London outfit 3-0 here on Saturday evening.

“We cannot forget which team we played. Tottenham for the most part of last season played the best football. It’s pre-season, but we didn’t have a performance like that last season,” he added.

The 46-year-old also felt that the win over Tottenham, who finished second spot in the EPL last season with 86 points — ahead of Manchester City — will be a confidence booster for his side.

“The results are good for confidence and the way we did it, our performance is good. I’m so satisfied, especially in the last two games,” Guardiola said.

Guardiola also heaped praise on the physical presence of newly signed right-backs Kyle Walker and Danilo.

“You have the quality with Kyle and Danilo, they have that physicality,” the former German football club Bayern Munich coach said.
