Former WWE Champion Dean Ambrose aka AEW’s Jon Moxley won the main event of this week’s AEW Dynamite. Per the stipulation of the match, he gets one step closer to picking up the interim AEW World Title at AEW and NJPW’s joint venture Forbidden Door 2022.
As noted, the June 8 main event of AEW Dynamite witnessed Moxley and Kyle O’Reilly squaring off in a singles encounter against one another. After a bulldog choke, Mox delivered several knees to a downed O’Reilly and then followed up with his signature Death Rider brainbuster to secure the pinfall win.
Forbidden Door 2022: AEW To Debut Another Championship; Details Revealed
With this win, Moxley now advances to Forbidden Door PPV on June 26 to compete in the interim AEW World Championship determinant match. His competitor in this match is yet to be announced but Tanahashi from NJPW is the rumored opponent.
During last Friday’s Rampage, it was announced that AEW World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk was suffering from a foot injury, possibly picked up from a tag team match from last week’s AEW Dynamite. This put him on the shelf for the foreseeable future.
Therefore it was announced that in his absence, an interim AEW World Champion will be determined where Jon Moxley would face a top NJPW star (likely to be NJPW’s Hiroshi Tanahashi or Hirooki Goti). Mox’s opponent will be determined after NJPW Dominion goes down on June 12 where these two men will wrestle for a title match opportunity.

AEW Dynamite: A Casino Battle Royale also took place
Also on AEW Dynamite, Kyle O’Reilly won a Casino Battle Royale to advance to the main event match against Moxley. O’Reilly was successful in getting a win at AEW Double or Nothing against Darby Allin before his loss at AEW Dynamite. As for Moxley, he and his stable the Blackpool Combat Club are on a roll. They have suffered a loss in the Anarchy in the Arena match at AEW Double or Nothing. But as a trio including Yuta and Bryan Danielson, they remain undefeated in AEW.
