This week’s AEW Dynamite had a marquee match on the card to crown the real women’s champion for the ROH promotion. Hence, we saw a clash between the original ROH Women’s Champion Deonna Purrazzo and the interim ROH Women’s Champion Mercedez Martinez.

After weeks of anticipation, the two female pro-wrestlers had a one-on-one match to settle the dispute with the ROH Women’s Title and determine the undisputed ROH Women’s Champion. After all said and done, Martinez ended up becoming the undisputed champion on AEW Dynamite. The finish of the match saw Martinez defeat Deonna Purrazzo by submission with a surfboard dragon sleeper to become the official Undisputed ROH Women’s Champion.

The latest win on AEW Dynamite crowned Martinez as the ‘Undisputed’ AEW Women’s World Champion is just the latest accolade in the lengthy career of Mercedes Martinez. She failed to become a champion during her WWE tenure but she does have the achievement of becoming a women’s champion in over ten different wrestling promotions, including Shimmer, IWA Mid-South Wrestling, and now, Ring of Honor.

Deonno Purrazzo lost both titles on AEW Dynamite

In the meantime, AEW Dynamite marked another title loss for the former dual champion Deonna Purrazzo. She previously lost the AAA Reina de Reinas Title to Taya Valkyre who doesn’t have the ROH title around her waist, as well. This match also marked Deonna’s debut on AEW Dynamite after a long anticipation.

In a media scrum following the ROH SuperCard of Honor in April, Tony Khan address the dual champion situation between Deonna Purrazzo and Mercedez Martinez with the following statement,

“Mercedes is a legendary wrestler for ROH and a legendary wrestler for the division, and now a great interim champion,” Khan explained. “Deonna is a little bit of an interesting situation because she is the lineal champion, but she also has other contractual obligations with other companies, so I don’t know when we will get to decide on the undisputed title. But there’s a lot of exciting stuff happening in the division.”

Prior to setting up the AEW Dynamite bout between the two champions, Tony Khan was uncertain about whether Deonna would be available to defend her ROH Title. Hence, he chose to have an interim champion in the form of Martinez. This led to the undisputed title match showdown to decide a winner who would represent the ROH women’s division.
