AEW Forbidden Door 2022: Update On Planned Top Title Matches

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2022 is indeed happening, later this month which happens to be a joint association of the two pro-wrestling promotions. Seeds of top matches for the event have already been planted on AEW programming and it’s likely that there will be two world championship matches on the card.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the current plan calls for the interim AEW World Title match to headline the Forbidden Door 2022. The groundwork for this match has already been done on AEW Dynamite.

CM Punk Undergoes Surgery; Update On Return To AEW Programming

Eyeing the forthcoming interim AEW World Title fight, a Casino Battle Royale was hosted in the opening segment of AEW’s flagship program. It was Kyle O’Reilly who picked up the victory that set him up to face the number-one ranked Jon Moxley in the main event match. Moxley defeated Kyle in that match after locking in a Bulldog Choke before hitting the Paradigm Shift and thereby solidifying his appearance at Forbidden Door 2022.

The IWGP Championship will also be on the card of the PPV as Meltzer indicated that it looks like a three-way match will go down featuring Adam Hangman Page, Adam Cole, and whoever the champion will be, either Okada or Jay White. White and Okada will fight over the belt at NJPW Dominion on June 12 with the winner heading into Forbidden Door 2022 for a title defense.

Triple Threat title match expected at AEW Forbidden Door 2022

Meltzer previously reported that the plans were to have Hangman vs. Okada straight up in a singles match at the late June event but now those plans were revealed to be incorrect as a triple threat is in the making.

The storyline is also moving in a similar fashion as Hangman Page made his intentions clear about going towards the IWGP Title after defeating David Finlay on Dynamite. Page said he doesn’t appear to be in AEW’s World Title picture but there’s not just one World Title and he wants to go after the IWGP champion, Okada.

Adam Cole then walked out and said to Page that Jay White could also become the new champion at Dominion. Besides, Page lost his world title at Double or Nothing while he won the Owen Hart tournament. Hence, he should be the one to get a title shot at Forbidden Door 2022. Further development in the storyline should be noticed, this week on Dynamite.
