With the reintroduction of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Roman Reigns no longer holds the complete monopoly over the WWE main event scene. This also opens the door for the undisputed champion to continue with his title reign and create more history. WWE also wants him to set more records they reportedly want him to rewrite the history books.
On the way, Roman Reigns will continue defending his undisputed title on an occasional basis and his probable next challenger’s name has now been revealed. According to the reports of Xero News, his next feud over the championship is scheduled to be against AJ Styles.
WWE Backlash 2023: Why Brock Lesnar Vs. Cody Rhodes Happening At May PLE?
AJ Styles returned to WWE during Draft 2023
The former two-time WWE Champion along with The O.C. (Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson & “Michin” Mia Yim), were drafted to SmackDown, this past Friday night. On that same night, he also returned from his ankle injury suffered in December 2022. The O.C., as a group made a statement on their return to the blue brand by taking The Viking Raiders and Valhalla.
Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles last took place at a WWE Live Event in 2022, where the champion obviously defeated the challenger. The last two and only two televised matches between these two Superstars took place in 2016, at the Payback & Extreme Rules PPVs, where Reigns defeated Styles to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Roman Reigns was Wrestlemania 39 main-event winner
Prior to this, Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Night Two in Hollywood on April 2. Moving forward, he went into a hiatus and will miss the Backlash premium live event set for this weekend.
This also suggests that Roman Reigns’ next title defense should happen at the Night Of Champions premium live event in Saudi Arabia on May 27th. On that same night, The Tribal Chief will also complete 1,000 days as champion which makes us believe that some kind of celebration should also be reserved for the champion.
Going by Xero News, AJ Styles should be the challenger for Roman Reigns at Night of Champions although WWE Universe shouldn’t expect any title change at the PLE. Andrew Zarian of the Wrestling Observer confirmed the same by stating in his report that he has been told numerous times that WWE wants to update its history books with longer title reigns.
