WWE has conducted the 2020 Payback pay-per-view, this week which went down just seven days after SummerSlam 2020 where Asuka wasn’t on the card. They booked a big match for Sasha Banks and Bayley on that night as these two went into a Women’s Tag Team Title defense against Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax.
An advertisement from WWE displayed that Asuka and Shayna Baszler was supposed to be the team facing the Golden Role Models, Sasha Banks, and Bayley. But this was sent out of the equation after Nia Jax and Baszler were booked in the match, all of a sudden. Apparently the storyline towards Payback was a big reason behind this.
Asuka Vs Shayna Baszler: WWE Canceled Interesting Title Feud?
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the interesting situation where a program between Asuka and Shayna Baszler was canceled. As per his reports, that booking at Payback could go on to affect more than just the tag team division. There’re new title-holders on the show whereas it’s not certain who’d be the next challenger for the Raw Women’s Championship.
“They had been building up Asuka and Baszler to come out of this from the beginning, so does this mean they’re not going to do Asuka and Baszler? It seemed that — didn’t it seem like Asuka was going to win the title and go with Shayna Baszler? I mean they, well obviously if you watch TV that’s the direction they’re going to go in.” (transcription by Ringside News)
It’ll be interesting to see what new direction WWE takes for the RAW Women’s Title, but it seems that the previous plans might have drastically been changed. Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax have bee teasing a rivalry for quite sometimes but now they have become new tag champs despite the claim how little they can stand each other.
As for Asuka, she was in search of the next contender for her title on Raw. As seen in this week’s episode, she did have a confrontation with Baszler but they are not likely to compete in a title match. Rather, Mickie James or Natalya could be the next challengers as they had a face-off with the champions. The next title defense for the Empress of Tomorrow could take place at Clash Of Champions 2020 pay-per-view.
