The June 17 episode of Friday Night Smackdown witnessed a surprise return of Brock Lesnar that in turn set up the main event of Summerslam 2022. In a rematch from Wrestlemania 38 Night Two, The Beast will be going up against Roman Reigns with the WWE Universal Championship hanging in the balance.
Smackdown main event witnessed an Undisputed WWE Universal Title match between Riddle and Roman Reigns where the latter survived an RKO attempt and then speared Riddle to get the pin-fall win. After the match, Reigns claimed that he’s wrecked everyone and it’s time to leave.
Brock Lesnar And Roman Reigns’ Appearance Schedule Revealed Towards WWE Summerslam 2022
It was then when Brock Lesnar’s music hit the arena to send his hometown fans sent into a frenzy. He made his way down to the ring, offered a handshake to Reigns, and then scooped Roman to execute an F-5. This move was followed by a couple of F-5s to The Usos as the show came to an end. Afterward, the main event of Summerslam was confirmed by the WWE.
Brock Lesnar’s WWE return was planned a few weeks ago
A recent report from Fightful Select offered some inside scoops on how another Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns storyline is happening in the WWE. This time around, WWE obviously didn’t have the plans to make it happen, heading into the next major Premium Live Event. The original plan intended for the main event was to have Randy Orton return and challenge for his title Roman at SummerSlam.
But then the latest updates claimed that Orton needs surgery to fix a back issue and will have an extensive recovery time, requiring him to stay out of action for the rest of 2022. Brock Lesnar was thereby called to be his replacement. People backstage were informed of the return to SmackDown around 5 PM ET. But he was not featured on the internal rundowns for the show before it began.
The report also added that the plan for Brock Lesnar’s return started to have a direction, apparently three weeks ago. Many believe that the investigation into Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis could be the reason that made WWE go into a panic mode but the decision to bring back the top WWE Superstar was made a long time ago. So, this has nothing to do with the allegation story published in the Wall Street Journal.
The belief is that the call to bring Brock Lesnar back was in no way reactionary to the allegations made to WWE head-honchos and it would simply benefit the company to sell out a big-scale event like Summerslam in late July.
