Edge is undoubtedly one of the most significant heels that WWE has ever seen. Especially his run in 2006 is memorable since he had a lengthy yet memorable feud with John Cena over the WWE Championship that would eventually elevate the two of them in the process. They were likely to share a Wrestlemania moment, together on the 22nd edition but that wasn’t the case.
On January 8, 2006, Edge cemented his name in the history book when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at New Year’s Revolution pay-per-view event to win his first WWE Championship from John Cena, in a first-of-its-kind incident. With all the momentums by his side, the new champion was expected to have a lengthy title run but he would lose to Cena three weeks later at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Obviously, it was WWE’s decision to have Edge tap out to Cena’s STF submission move and he could do nothing about it. In a way losing that belt could have kept him out of the main event picture with Wrestlemania so close in the schedule. So the Rated R Superstar has every right to be mad about his situation as WWE didn’t let him capitalize on the heel run.

Edge opened up about his Wrestlemania 22 experience
An episode of the WWE Untold focused on Edge’s WrestleMania 22 win over the hardcore legend Mick Foley. During the episode, the eleven-time world champion revealed he was genuinely offended about losing the WWE Title to John Cena at Royal Rumble 2006.
“That [losing to John Cena] made me mad because I felt like I was doing everything I could on my end and I was very motivated, and then in talking to Mick Foley I realized that he was just as motivated to get that moment and to help me, to help me solidify myself as a main-event player here, to help me change the perception in the fans’ eyes.”
Thanks to the hardcore match at Wrestlemania 22 in front of a rowdy crowd in Chicago, Edge recovered in a better-than-ever way. Some of the most insane moments were performed by the two icons in that match where the end witnessed a gigantic spear through a flamed table to Foley. That match also helped the winner, Edge to come back to the main event picture within a couple of months and regain the WWE Title.
