John Cena managed to keep his valiant streak intact of competing in a WWE match over the past two decades, each year starting with 2002 by featuring in action during the December 30 episode of Smackdown. WWE was the first to announce the return of their former franchise player on TV during the final 2022 episode of the blue brand at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
Then, John Cena made an appearance via satellite to reveal himself to be Kevin Owens’ mystery partner for their tag team match against Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. That appearance confirmed that he would compete during the last SmackDown of the year.

When the match actually happened, the babyface duo defeated the heel duo of Reigns and Zayn in that tag team affair. Prior to his return, there were several rumors that the returnee would drop some news on performing a match at Wrestlemania 39 but that wasn’t the case. The good thing is that backstage ongoing was there to possibly ensure his attendance at the Show of Shows.

John Cena could be planned for ‘Mania match against Austin Theory
Fightful Select reports that there were plans to film something between John Cena and Austin Theory on the December 30 episode of SmackDown. Theory was originally supposed to wrestle Seth Rollins in a live show in Toronto but he was pulled from the show so that he could be in attendance of the Smackdown in Tampa, where he was set to film a segment with the 16-time world champion,
“A changed live event main event could have a lot more behind it than meets the eye. Fightful Select has learned that WWE had at least planned to film something with John Cena and WWE United States Champion Austin Theory while Cena was in for the December 30 Smackdown show.”
The reason for the filming wasn’t specifically stated by the source as they also speculated possible WWE 2K contents to be shot. However, WWE has also previously teased a John Cena vs. Austin Theory match, possibly at Wrestlemania 39 and there’s no confirmation whether that match is indeed in the pipeline for the Show of Shows.
From what Wrestling Observer has reported, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and John Cena are the three big names scheduled for Wrestlemania Hollywood. Their capacity of appearance hasn’t been revealed.
