John Cena is the former franchise player of the WWE who has been part of numerous historic moments in his career. After achieving almost everything in his illustrious stint with the WWE, he’s now out to earn a name for himself in Hollywood. But WWE will always admittedly be his home and he would be back whenever he gets a free schedule in between.
The worldwide fanbase of John Cena is aware of his monumental achievements in the WWE. He’s a 16-time world heavyweight champion who’s carried the load for the company for so many years. But there’s one particular record that he must not be so proud of.

John Cena is the one to start the trend of failed Money in the Bank cash-in. It was in 2012 during the 1,000th episode of WWE Raw that he failed to win the WWE Championship from CM Punk after cashing in his MITB contract after when Big Show caused a disqualification. It was the first time anyone in WWE history had failed to successfully cash in the briefcase.

Austin Theory followed the footsteps of John Cena as he also failed to cashed-in his Money In The Bank contract during the November 7 episode of Raw. He cashed in on Seth Rollins for the United States Championship, but Bobby Lashley interfered and destroyed Theory, allowing Rollins to defeat Theory to retain the US Title.
Addressing the incident another superstar who had gone through a similar experience reminded everyone that John Cena is the one to form the club of WWE Superstars with failed Money in the Bank cash-ins. “Hey @_Theory1 welcome to the club. We are a special group led by @JohnCena,” tweeted Corbin.
Below is the list of names that cashed-in their Money In The Bank contracts but ended up losing,
1. John Cena (2012) (against CM Punk)
2. Damien Sandow (2013) (against John Cena)
3. Baron Corbin (2017) (against Jinder Mahal)
4. Braun Strowman (2018) (against Roman Reigns)
5. Austin Theory (2022) (against Seth Rollins)
The likes of Mr. Kennedy and Otis aren’t mentioned in the list because they didn’t have the opportunity to cash in. Rather, they lost their MITB contracts to Edge (2007) and The Miz (2020), respectively and on both occasions, the new MITB winners went on to become world champions.
