Even before crowning the new World Heavyweight Champion, WWE Chief Content Officer was very clear about the concept which said that this is going to be a workhorse belt. It would be defended against anybody and any time and place. So, the contenders could come forward beyond the main roster. We got the example during this week’s NXT when a surprise was waiting for the champion.
In the final segment of the latest episode of NXT, Bron Breakker revealed that he wants to face new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins for the title. In a backstage promo segment, he invited the top champion from Raw to the NXT brand and put his title on the line. It seems that the second-generation athlete is over with the NXT Championship and he’s looking forward to the bigger picture.
In his promo, Breakker further mentioned Breakker that if the World Heavyweight Champion wants to prove that he’s “the workhorse of WWE” then he should come back to the developmental brand and put his title on the line.
It was also reminded that Rollins was the inaugural NXT Champion while Breakker was the most dominant champion with that particular title. Rollins is a 1-time NXT champion while Breakker is a former 2-time NXT Champion who also was the cornerstone figure of NXT 2.0. His most recent reign lasted for nearly a year, from April 4, 2022, to April 1, 2023.
New WWE World Heavyweight Champion crowned at Night of Champions 2023
As for Seth Rollins, he became the WWE World Heavyweight Champion last month at the WWE Night of Champions premium live event after defeating AJ Styles in the finals of a tournament hosted for the returning title belt.
Within two weeks of winning the belt, Rollins has already gone through his first defense this week on Raw by defeating Judgment Day’s Damian Priest. Currently, Rollins stands as a former 2-time WWE Champion, a former 2-time Universal Champion, and the first-ever NXT Champion.
The only active title that he hasn’t held is the Smackdown Tag Team Title. There’s no confirmed update on what’s next for the World Heavyweight Champion but going by the happening on Raw, Finn Balor is also likely getting a title shot. Balor vs. Rollins for the title is rumored to go down at Money in the Bank in early July.
